Through no fault of their own Dublin band The Gorgeous Colours became an unfortunate casualty of set clashes at HWCH. I had really high hopes for catching them especially with release of their EP this week which follows up their critically acclaimed eponymous debut album in 2008.
The story of their EP is an interesting one, after exhausting their own resources they took an unlikely and inventive approach to funding the record. They set up a pledge system which offered fans the chance to pre-order the EP with the chance of anything from attending a secret gig to challenging the band to a game of 5-a-side football, depending on the amount pledged.
The result? Around 100 pledges taking in just over €2000 and the EP is now recorded and ready to go. I haven’t heard it in its entirety yet but judging by title track ‘The Creature Down Below’, a bright, bubbly piece of sunshine filled indie, it should be great.
The Gorgeous Colours launch The Creatures Down Below EP @ 8pm in Whelan’s this Thursday 14th October – €10 and support from Cloud Castle Lake.
