Ulrika Spacek – ‘Beta Male’

img158

Ulrika Spacek have made quite a habit in blowing our socks off with stunning tunes, doing so on two separate occasions last year, with the discordant indie-rock of ‘She’s A Cult’ and pulsating psych rocker ‘I Don’t Know’.

Ulrika Spacek have kicked off 2016 by going even one better with news they will release their debut LP, The Album Paranoia on February 5th through Tough Love. Coinciding with this most excellent news, the Berlin based outfit have afforded us another choice sample from their forthcoming debut in the shape of ‘Beta Male’. It is highly-charged yet starry-eyed trip, blazing through six-plus minutes of exploratory psychedelia on the strength of one momentous, scintillating guitar riff. Another magnificent, melodic, masterclass in tuneage from Ulrika Spacek, which needless to say, should have you salivating at the prospect of a full album’s worth of material.

The debut LP, The Album Paranoia is out on February 5th through Tough Love and for now, you can check out the scintillating ‘Beta Male’, below.

Ulrika Spacek – ‘She’s A Cult’

Berlin formed but London based Ulrika Spacek are lining up the release of their debut LP The Album Paranoia for early next year.

Earlier this year Ulrika Spacek introduced themselves with their spacey debut single ‘I Don’t Know’, which suggested substantial promise and it is welcome news to find they wrapped up a debut LP in double-quick time. With their debut record in mind, they have afforded us a glimpse of what to expect in the shape of single, ‘She’s A Cult’. Drawing influence from Krautrock to Television, Sonic Youth and Pavement, ‘She’s A Cult’ is a driving, somewhat menacing burst of melodious and discordant post-punk indie. It hits a sweet spot, cross pollinating hypnotic fuzz, melodious and grit, intertwined with feelings of both angst and melancholia. Very promising indeed, especially with regard to their forthcoming debut – The Album Paranoia – out on February 5, 2016, through Tough Love Records in Europe and Lefse Records in the N. America.

You can sample ‘She’s A Cult’ below and you can check out their spacey debut single ‘I Don’t Know’, here.

A regular monthly feature to the blog; a nice, neat and handy playlist of tracks featured during the month.

It was a pretty big month for the blog to be fair. We celebrated 5 years of BarryGruff with GruffWuff; a 19 track compilation of new, previously unreleased and exclusive recordings from some of my very favourite acts over the past 5 years of blogging. If somehow you missed all the hoo-ha about ‘GruffWuff’, there’s more info here & you can download / stream it here: Bandcamp / Soundcloud.

Aside from this rather significant milestone, there was the return of Tame Impala, Applescal, Crocodiles and Cian Ciaran with new tracks ahead of their respective albums, and new singles from Teleman, Telegram, Girls Names, Tandem Felix, The Dead Heavys, CaStLeS and Spies. Also featuring on the playlist are: Django Django, Ulrika Spacek, By The Sea, Hippies Vs Ghosts and O Emperor.

Listen to BarryGruff`s March 2015 playlist below. The track listing is after the jump:

Ulrika Spacek – ‘I Don’t Know’

Originally from Berlin and now based in London, Ulrika Spacek initially formed under the joke that the music would sound like Wooden Shijps trying to cover Television.

In reality, the pairings first track, ‘I Don’t Know’, is an ever so promising slice of warm psychedelia, jangle pop, and fuzz. Opening with a scintillating riff, it ropes you in to reveal a warm and pleasant land of drones, blissed-out guitars that combine in a haze of spaced out sounds, that are topped off with dreamy vocal harmonies. A pulsating, lo-fi psych rocker, that’s utterly divine and soul consuming-ly infectious. Ulrika Spacek have been working on a self-produced record from various rooms in their shared house, suggesting, thankfully, we may not have too long a wait to hear more from the duo.

For now? It’s time to tune in (and zone out) to the wonderful world of Ulrika Spacek. Try ‘I Don’t Know’ below.
