The Orange Kyte Announce Debut Album; Share ‘Blue Ghosts’

The-Orange-Kyte-790x593

Vancouver’s The Orange Kyte spent the 12 months of 2016 delighting us with their superb single-a-month project throughout the year.

Centred around Vancouver-based, Dublin-raised Stevie Moonboots and a revolving cast of friends and collaborators, The Orange Kyte treated us to one sumptuous slice of psych-rock after another. Signalling their intentions for 2017, Moonboots and his merry band of cohorts have announced they will release their debut LP The Orange Kyte Says Yes!, this coming autumn. Ahead of the record’s release, The Orange Kyte have provided a taste of things to come with new single ‘Blue Ghosts’ – and its a doozy. A droning organ is front and centre alongside Moonboots’ recognisably sublime vocals. Backed a heady sonic brew of mildly fuzzed-up guitars, bass and fevered percussive assault. It danders nicely along until the just after the midway point, where by it slows, bobbing for a moment or two before exploding to another stratospheric level entirely. The addition of the sax to their arsenal of trippy psychedelic sounds is nothing short of mesmerising. Great to see one of finer musical discoveries of recent times kick on, and no doubt deliver the goods with an LP.

You can listen to ‘Blue Ghosts’ below. Keep an eye out for a definitive date for the album’s release.

In other news, the aforementioned 2016 single compilation Grow it Right is now available for pre-order from Little Cloud Records.

The Orange Kyte – ‘Just Like Leningrad’

Vancouver’s The Orange Kyte is on the cusp of completing a mammoth quest, releasing a single-a-month throughout the year.

Centred around Vancouver-based, Dublin-raised Stevie Moonboots and a revolving cast of friends and collaborators, The Orange Kyte has shared ‘Just Like Leningrad’; the penultimate single in 2016’s single-a-month series. A sprawling five-minutes of spiralling, shape-shifting psych-rock, the droning organ takes centre stage alongside Moonboots’ irresistible vocals as a heady sonic brew of oscillating guitars, throbbing bassline, fevered percussive assault and blistering brass is unleashed to devastating effect. We’ve been treated to some fine music already but this is up there with the very best. The Orange Kyte, the songs and the project has been most enjoyable throughout 2016, but keeping up this level of output in 2017 is probably asking a bit much, eh? Hopefully there is still more to come from The Orange Kyte.

Well, there is one more single before the year is out but for now, why not gift your years the joys of ‘Just Like Leningrad’. And also, The Orange Kyte has announced some Irish shows for December, check them after the jump.

The Orange Kyte – ‘Elasticity’

Throughout 2016, Vancouver’s The Orange Kyte has been on an enviable quest to release a new single each month and if you’ve been keeping tabs on proceedings, then you’ve been treated to some fine music already.

Centred around Vancouver-based, Dublin-raised Stevie Moonboots and a revolving cast of friends and collaborators, The Orange Kyte continue with their impressive musical manifesto with superb new single ‘Elasticity’. ‘It swaggers and grooves its way through a swirling haze of psychedelic ambience, meandering pleasantly toward the midpoint before exploding into life as guitars growl, synths swell and a tambourine snaps, with Moonboots’ incredibly impressive vocals soaring high above. Elasticity’ pulses through the gears towards a triumphant climax, of what is an irrepressible sonic exploration of the psychedelic. It is yet another intoxicating release from The Orange Kyte, one can wonder if all these singles would make for a hell of an album, if all put together.

You can get your hands on ‘Elasticity’ here. Or, conversely, check it below, and its video; comprised of road trip footage from the band’s recent trek to Alberta for shows in Calgary and Edmonton.

The Orange Kyte – ‘The Lone Rooster’

The-Orange-Kyte-790x790

If you’ve been keeping tabs on Vancouver’s The Orange Kyte throughout 2016, then you’ve been treated to some fine music already.

Revolving around Vancouver-based, Dublin-raised Stevie Moonboots (House of Dolls & The Subterranean Satellite Band), experimental music project The Orange Kyte began in January with an admirable manifesto to release a single a month, throughout the year. July’s instalment is ‘The Lone Rooster’ and joining Stevie Moonboots on guitar and synth duties is Robbie Brady of Exploding Eyes (formerly of the mighty, mighty, Dublin band The Things). A track of summery, shimmering psychedelic blissfulness, ‘The Lone Rooster’ is adorned with a bright alluring sheen, filled with an effervescent rush and a general air of coolness. It is yet another intoxicating piece of psych-tinged indie brilliance, something we’re becoming accustomed to as throughout 2016,  The Orange Kyte has proven to be the gift that keeps on giving.

Farewell Vancouver: Vancouver Connection Playlist

BGVAN

After a couple of extremely fun years, my time in Canada is drawing to a close. As well as taking away no end of fond memories from Canada’s west coast, there is also a long, long list of local musical discoveries.

So, with that in mind and the impending return to Ireland, I decided to create a playlist of some of my very favourite artists/musical discoveries from Vancouver (and the surrounding areas). If nothing else, it will offer a taste of what this part of the world has to offer musically. Included among the 66 strong list are regulars on the blog and podcast, the likes of Kinship, Mesa Luna, Avid Walker, Bousada, The Orange Kyte, Supermoon, Soft Serve, Danny Diggs, Faith Healer, Project Pablo and more. Hopefully you enjoy the tunes as much as I do and it keeps you ticking over till the returns to normal service, once everything is settled after the move.

On that note, I shall leave you with the finest music BC has to offer.

BarryGruff April 2016 Playlist

BGAP16

Your regular monthly round up all the blog action, in a nice, neat and handy playlist of tracks featured throughout the month.

April was good, as was the weather but even better tunes and whatnot (although I was pretty busy with matters away from the blog). We had tracks courtesy of Amber Arcade, FFUG, SALES, Holy Fuck and Foreign/National from their respective, new and forthcoming albums. We had introductions to Supermoon and OMALOMA, while there were excellent new singles/EPs from Colleen Green, L.A. Witch, Koloto, Peaness, The Orange Kyte, Estrons and Pavel. Oh, and there were two new episodes of ‘Millions Like Us’, Justin Beats & I’s music podcast for 604now (if you missed them, check ’em here). You can also subscribe to ‘Millions Like Us’ on iTunes & Podcast Republic or find us on Facebook & Twitter.

Well then, that’s that for another month – listen to BarryGruff’s April 2016 playlist below. Enjoy!

The Orange Kyte – ‘Which Vivian?’

0007135760_10

Revolving around Vancouver-based, Dublin-raised Stevie Moonboots (House of Dolls & The Subterranean Satellite Band), The Orange Kyte is an experimental music project with an admirable manifesto to release a single a month, throughout 2016.

Along with a revolving and merry band of collaborators and cohorts, The Orange Kyte promises sonic explorations in sound. Drawing heavily from a love of ethereal tones, fuzz, reverberation and all things psychedelic, the third instalment of the year, ‘Which Vivian?’ delivers just that. It takes a bright, shimmering surge of ’80s, Bunnymen-esque post-punk, treating it to some early ’90s shoegaze and indie guitar jangle, and wrapping it up nicely in a light, fuzzy haze of mild psychedelia. Mesmerizing and intoxicating in equal measure, ‘Which Vivian?’ is the best yet from an impressive trio of tunes this year. The Orange Kyte promises to be a gift that keeps on giving in 2016.

Introducing: The Orange Kyte

12647144_1054063844636075_8367236936126063637_n

The Orange Kyte is an experimental music project with an admirable manifesto to release a single a month, throughout 2016.

The brainchild of Vancouver-based, Dublin-raised Stevie Moonboots (House of Dolls & The Subterranean Satellite Band), along with a revolving cast of collaborators and cohorts, promise sonic explorations in sound. Drawing heavily from a love of ethereal tones, fuzz, reverberation and all things psychedelic, they deliver just that. Debut single ‘Morning Pages’, featuring Chris van der Laan of Vancouver punks Wars, is a woozy, dreamy & hypnotic, shoegaze tinged brand of psych-rock, all shimmering guitars and hazy vibes. As far as opening gambits go, this ranks pretty damn high. It’s going to be very intriguing (and rewarding, hopefully) to track the continuous evolution of The Orange Kyte project.

You can check out The Orange Kyte’s debut single, ‘Morning Pages’, below now. And track the progress of the project here, too.
