Hard Working Class Heroes 2016 Preview: 8 Must See Acts

Hard Working Class Heroes takes place in venues across Dublin this week.

Running from Thursday, October 6th to Saturday, October 8th and it will showcase well over 100 of Ireland’s most promising emerging acts. One of HWCH’s biggest draws (and festivals of its ilk) is rambling around, seeing acts you have previously been unfamiliar with. That said, there are a couple of names that immediately jump out and come highly recommended with the much sought after BarryGruff seal of approval*.

Eoin Dolan: Thursday, 19:40 – 20:10 @ Tengu Downstairs

Galway-based singer-songwriter Eoin Dolan is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the finest finds from the past 12 months. Dolan has a real flair for twinkly and whimsical, good old fashioned pop gems, with a healthy dose of Brian Wilson, Syd Barrett and Lennon/McCartney (moments) threaded through the fabric of his sound. His brand of surfy psych-pop is totally charming, entirely irresistible, easy-going and timeless. Dolan’s self-titled debut album was released last month, for a taste of that & what to expect at HWCH, check out ‘Dear Brian’; a playful blend of woozy, soothing sounds, sinuous melodies, SFA-esque synth work, giddy-pop-playfulness and reverb-drenched vocals. Not to be missed.

New Pope: Thursday, 21:40 – 22:10 @ Tengu Downstairs

Galway-based New Pope – fronted by Dave Boland – deal in truly beautiful, timeless and carefully crafted acoustic folk sounds. Passing with a whisper rather than a roar, New Pope’s songs are delivered with warmth and tenderness, as Boland’s distinctive vocal creates a warm, lush atmosphere – and an overwhelming sense of sense of nostalgia. Last year’s YOUTH EP & LP are wonderful and New Pope were excellent at Electric Picnic this year, and if that doesn’t entice you? Check out the layered, lush and beguiling beauty of ‘Love’ below:

Slow Riot: Friday, 20:10 – 20:40 @ The Hub

Limerick trio Slow Riot‘s ferocious, tense and searing post-punk, has marked them out as one of Ireland’s most promising guitar bands in sometime. Taking classic post-punk influences – Gang of Four, Television, Wire – and infusing them with more contemporary ones such as Girl Band and Future of the Left, they create an irresistible and thunderous modern take on a classic sound. Hard Working Class Heroes 2016 Line-up Announced

The line-up for Hard Working Class Heroes 2016 festival has just been announced today.

The annual festival will return to Dublin once again, running from Thursday, October 6th to Saturday, October 8th in venues across Dublin, incl. The Workman’s Club, Wigwam, The Chocolate Factory, Odessa, Tengu and The Mezz, with more to follow.

Having been away for the past few years, I’m excited to check out a whole host of acts I’ve not had the pleasure of seeing yet. And of course, discovering some new music too. On a first glance a couple of names immediately jumped out; Oh Boland, New Pope, whenyoung, Eoin Dolan, A.S. Fanning, Adultrock, Galants, EXPLODING EYES, R.S.A.G, Slow Riot & Rusangano Family.

Slow Riot – ‘Trophy Wife’

Limerick post-punk trio Slow Riot have returned with a heavy-hitting new single, ‘Trophy Wife’.

Following in from 2015’s impressive debut EP Cathedral, which combined the band’s classic post-punk influences – Gang of Four, Television, Wire – and infused them with more contemporary bands such as Girl Band and Future of the Left; the seething new single has added a further dimension to their already peerless sound. Fueled by a deep undercurrent of despondent-aggression, ‘Trophy Wife’ like a slowly uncoiled spring, a seething, pent up anger is released across a just shy of 4-minutes, hurtling toward a turbulent post-punk climax. It is intense, insistent, menacing and demands your attention as frontman, Niall Clancy serves the vocals, exploring a more laid back, art-rock groove (reminiscent of Julian Casablancas and early Horrors). ‘Trophy Wife’ is Slow Riot’s best work to date and decisively demonstrates the trio’s considerable promise.

We’re thrilled to share yet another Millions Like Us podcast with you all. It’s great to back with the latest in a series of music podcasts hosted by Justin & I, in conjunction with Vancouver news & culture site 604now.

On a bi-weekly basis we aim to please, providing  some lively and entertaining chat and eclectic selection of fabulous music from metro Vancouver and elsewhere. There’s plenty in there, well over an hour in fact, of great tunes and plenty of chat.

Slow Riot – ‘Demons’

Irish post-punk trio Slow Riot – Niall Clancy, Aaron Duff & Paul Cosgrave – follow up their debut single, ‘City Of Culture’, with an equally mesmerizing new track, ‘Demons’.

Although ‘City of Culture’ was a ferocious, tense and searing blast of sardonic post-punk, ‘Demons’ is more of a slow burner. Gradually it builds, slowly introducing itself with pounding drums, rumbling bass, chiming guitar and singer Niall Clancy’s deadpan delivery, before injecting greater urgency and bluster, as scorching riffs and thunderous percussion hurtle toward an an epic climax. Their debut single set the bar pretty high and while ‘Demons’ is different, it is also quite similar too. Most importantly, it is an impressively epic song which decisively demonstrates Slow Riot’s considerable promise.

‘Demons’ is taken from Slow Riot’s forthcoming EP Cathedral, out October 23rd. It was recorded in the Manic Street Preachers’ FASTER studio in Cardiff with producer Kevin Vanbergen (The Pixies, The La’s, Dinosaur Pile-Up) – check ‘Demons’ out below.

June was another pretty fine month for new music. We had new tunes from Girls Names, Sextile, Hibou, Velvet Morning & Hooton Tennis Club ahead of their respective, forthcoming new albums. There were excellent new singles from Hyde & Beast, Freedom Fry, Dan Amor, Slow Riot, Tomorrows, Alaska Wilson & PANKHABILLI.

Also featured on this month’s playlist are great tracks from Seazoo, The Statics, CZARFACE, Peaness, Energy Slime & Pale Honey. Yeah, so, June was good. And that’s all before mentioning the interview with Ric Rawlins about his new book, ‘Rise of the Super Furry Animals’ – read it here.

Slow Riot – ‘City Of Culture’

Irish post-punk trio Slow Riot – Niall Clancy (formerly of The Vagabonds), Aaron Duff & Paul Cosgrave – are releasing their debut single, ‘City Of Culture’, via Straight Lines Are Fine on July 10th.

Having already shared some promising demos with world, ‘City Of Culture’ offers a perfect introduction (or re-introduction) to the band. A sarcastic ode to the cultural status bestowed upon their native Limerick in 2014, ‘City Of Culture’, combines classic post-punk influences of Gang of Four, Television, Wire, while conjuring up the likes of Girl Band, The Rakes, Sluts of Trust and Future of the Left at different points song, for a fired-up, raucous three-and-half-minutes of post-punk. Exploding out of the blocks with ferocious vitality and energy, Clancy’s apathetic yet angry vocals are buried in the midst of dark, bass-heavy rumblings, layers of sharp guitars and searing noise. Dark, brooding and bone-rattling; impressive stuff indeed.

‘City Of Culture’ is taken from their forthcoming Cathedral EP, due later in the year, both were recorded at the Manic Street Preachers’ FASTER studio in Cardiff with producer Kevin Vanbergen. For now, there’s the no so small matter of ‘City Of Culture’. Check it below.
