Introducing: Alighted

Alighted is the moniker of Los Angeles-based producer McLean Macionis, who has introduced his solo wares with debut EP Resurfaced.

Alighted’s debut is a wonderful collection comprised from warm analog sounds, raw field recordings, and meandering ruminating atmospheric textures. Drawing inspiration from a personal battle with cancer, the EP is a powerful epic complete with moments of hardship, emotion, awe and sheer bliss.

This prowess is best demonstrated by opening and title-track; ‘Resurfaced‘. It is a dazzling jam with colourful tones, flashes of shimmering synths and dreamy melodies all woven together with a playful allure while the slick beats patter below in tandem with rumbling bass and warm arpeggiated melody. Immersive and hypnotic it majestically blurring the lines between exhilarating electro and ethereal electronica. While differing in style, An Imperfect Circle’ is equally as spectacular. It is a dazzling downtempo meander through ethereal tones, shimmering synths and glinting electronics; cosmic and cinematic, it is all draped in a smouldering sense of awe.

‘Resurfaced’ is a magnificent introduction to a very promising talent, no question. Tune in to two choice cuts below and the EP is here.

Fe.Arts – ‘Cassette Love’

Fe.Arts is an Italian producer/DJ with a penchant for lush, warm and woozy slices of seductive house/electronica.

New single, ‘Cassette Love’ is an utterly sublime distillation of uplifting and sunny vibes, and feels like summer incarnate. It is a lush, lavish and sunkissed affair that opens with a crackling soul sample over a lo-fi gentle tiss beat that accompanied by shimmering guitar layers becomes more and more dancey, culminating in thumping four-on-the-floor beat and lilting brass. A masterful demonstration of sound manipulation, ‘Cassette Love’ whisks us off to a world of lavish exploration through genres, styles and eras – it is one to get lost in as it forms a real sense of familiarity, oozing nostalgic feelings for hazy summer days and nights – and something that will keep you coming back for more.

AUTORHYTHM – ‘Endorphins’

‘Endorphins’ is the aptly titled, and hypnotic debut single from Swedish producer Joakim Forsgren aka AUTORHYTHM.

The AUTORHYTHM  sound finds a home in a space between Krautrock, Techno, Acid and No Wave that whisks us off to a futuristic world composed of layered improvisations, each in response to the prior layer building grooves and sounds in an all consuming seduction. These aforementioned quality are found in abundance on debut ‘Endorphins’ as it builds and builds with layers of bubbling synth and winding grooves atop of metronomic beatwork. It is a  subtle, nuanced and transfixing, dancefloor minded, kosmische techno sound. Heavy on layers, mood, texture and atmosphere with relentless oscillations, driving techno beat and pulsating synth that captivates and hypnotises in equal measure. Driving, pulsating and relentless – a triumph.

Fable – ‘Orbiting’

Brighton’s Fable (aka Holly Cosgrove) has a real flair for captivating, cinematic electronica; something that is patently clear from new single ‘Orbiting’.

With a debut album recorded and newly-signed to Naim Records, ‘Orbiting’ should be the first of many offerings from Fable throughout 2021 – and if they are anything like this, we are in for a treat. Hauntingly stark, yet hopeful, ‘Orbiting’ is an expansive yet cosy trip-hop-inspired sound as Fable’s stunning vocals glide across a super smooth, downtempo groove and serene bassline while the atmospheric surrounding smoulder with rich allure and moving emotion.  The deftness of touch here is breathtaking, it remains simultaneously blissfully dreamy and intimate and yet expansive and epic – no mean feat.

‘Orbiting’ is out now and it’s a truly stunning single, and perfect introduction to Fable. Tune in below.

Deyah – ‘Ultimate Dinner Party’

Fresh off the back of winning the Welsh Music Prize 2020 with excellent album Care City, Cardiff MC & producer Deyah, has returned with brand new single ‘Ultimate Dinner Party’.

The new single continues a trend established by the excellent self-produced and self-released Care City; real prowess for honest, personal and introspective tales backed by laid-back vibes and slick beats. A warm but wistful synth purrs amid a hazy nocturnal air, marked by an overwhelmingly laidback, chilled vibe while a slick, snappy and quite skittish beat ping pongs around the woozy atmosphere. As great as this is, everything is secondary to Deyah’s voice. A rich soulful voice delivering an honest, personal and powerful tale with a distinct and precise lyrical flow. Deyah is one of the most exciting and unique artists to cross my path in a while, no word of a lie, ‘Ultimate Dinner Party’ has been on repeat for the past two weeks. Simply superb.

Amber Jay – ‘Stay The Same’

Amber Jay is a Liverpool-based artist and musician with a real flair in the way of captivating, synth-splashed, electronic alt-pop – and this flair is matched by an enviable embrace for experimentation and pushing the boundaries.

Jay introduced this penchant for futuristic synth-fueled alt-pop with ‘Pencilled Brims’ toward the backend of last year and has kicked off 2021 in similarly sublime fashion with ‘Stay The Same’. Opening patiently, ‘Stay The Same’ slowly introduces itself as Amber’s crisp vocals cruise above a woozy atmosphere and slo-mo groove before a hypnotic pulsing synth and snappy beat up the pace as we traverse an ever-evolving soundscape. It is hypnotic, immersive and futuristic, filled with luscious harmonies, hooks and seductive grooves; ‘Stay The Same’ feels, like its predecessor, vibrant and alive, and effortlessly transcending genres.

Amber Jay’s debut EP Never Too Far From A Dark Thought will be released on March 3, listen to ‘Stay The Same’ below:

Dystopic L. – ‘Caos IV’

Dystopic L., alter ego of Lázaro Pereira, is a Portuguese DJ and producer influenced as much by electronic music as science fiction films and philosophical movements.

The Dystopic L. sound finds a home in a space between techno and minimalism that whisks us off to a futuristic world of darkness, chaos and dissonance. Latest single ‘Caos IV’ is a perfect case in point – a subtle, nuanced and transfixing, dancefloor minded, techno influenced music. Heavy on mood, texture and atmosphere with relentless oscillations, driving techno beat and pulsating synth that captivates and hypnotises in equal measure. Although everything is delivered with a pin point accuracy, it has a grainy and dusty feel, as we are entranced by relentless repetition and groove, leaving us utterly powerless to resist it’s tempting allure. Driving, pulsating and relentless – it is dark and moody but burning with intensity – a triumph.

Listen to ‘Caos IV’ below and if that is to your liking, check out the album ‘Symphony of Dystopia’ here.

Kelp – ‘Spleen’

“I know I’m not the hero you asked for, or wanted.. or needed… also I’m really not a hero. Presenting the misadventures of a miniature deep-sea diver fishbowl figurine.”

So goes the surrealist introduction to Kelp; Belfast-based purveys of loungey cosmic electronica fronted by an inch high, ethereal deep sea diver with a preoccupation for vocoders and additive synthesis. Kelp’s debut single is ‘Spleen’ an ethereal, slumbering and woozy slice of escapism. Anchored by a deep seductive groove, hazy vocoder vocals hover dreamily above a delicious blend of bubbling synths, lush strings and flickering electronics as we are treated to a whirring, cosmic and futuristic synth escape. Is the world ready for a loungey electronica outfit fronted by an inch high, ethereal deep sea diver? Maybe not but we’ve seen strange things happen in 2020 and judging by the music, we would be well to embrace this surreal experiment into our hearts.

Listen to ‘Spleen’ below now – it is an absolute joy.

ae inc. – ‘Krystina’

ae inc. is the latest musical project from songwriter & producer David Sanderson (aka David Harks) who has been the recipient of much deserved lavish praise for his work with Safetalk, varying collaborative projects and of course, his solo work.

Adding to this huge diverse and impressive back catalogue is ‘Krystina’; the debut outing for the fledgling ae inc project – and it is up there with the very best of his work to date. ‘Krystina’ struts into view, slinking upon a bed of cushioned beats, deep groove and pulsing synth as hushed melodic vocals flow amid the woozy textures & dreamy harmonies above. It is warm and uplifting, dreamy and seductive as subtle bouts of euphoria and mild ravey undertones illuminate the hazy allure and undercurrent of melancholy. Sanderson already has an enviable back catalogue over supreme quality and ‘Krystina’ is up there with the very best of his work.

Listen to ‘Krystina’ below – it does not disappoint.

ELPENTHE – ‘Rev-O-Lution’

ELPENTHE is the moniker of producer & musician Elliott Beenk. Originally from a small Iowa farm town, he now resides in Venice, CA and where he continues to collaborate as a producer and songwriter —  with current focus on ELPENTHE; his debut electronic-dance artist project.

His debut outing for the fledgling project is ‘Rev-O-Lution’ – a stunning single and a serious statement of intent. ‘Rev-O-Lution’ feels huge and anthemic while being simultaneously open and intimate as it moves through styles and textures, everything held together by a deft ear. The central beat is constructed from samples recorded from the Youth Climate Strike with Greta Thunberg in downtown LA last year. It builds, loops upon loops, with each new layer of groove slotting into place beneath a dazzling blend of warm shimmering synth, luminescent flourishes and woozy haze. Underpinned by dusty beats and deep bass, it quickly swells into a richly melodic, bewitching and irresistible allure. An absolutely stunning cut.
