Steve Mason – ‘Am I Just A Man’ (Studio Remix)

Until recently Steve Mason would have definitely been more familiar to most under his previous guise as frontman of the Beta Band. He’s grown older, wiser and earlier this year he released his excellent solo album, Boys Outside, a mixture of  wistful melancholy, warmth and tenderness. If you haven’t already make sure and pick it up.

One of the standout tracks from the album ‘Am I Just A Man’ has just received the remix treatment by Swedish duo, Studio. It’s completely turned on its head, a remarkable transition from eerily haunting to uplifting, like something straight from the Caribbean Islands.

Nice work if you can get it.

Kill Krinkle Club :: Album Launch :: Friday 17 Sept

There’s a lot of stuff happening this weekend and here’s one of two gigs I’m aiming to catch this weekend in Dublin.

Irish-Swedish duo Kill Krinkle Club launch their debut album Abandon this coming Friday, 17 September in Dublin’s Crawdaddy. This weeks been one of becoming acquainted with their album which is mixed by Tom McFall (REM/Editors) and Declan Gaffney (U2/ Interpol). I’m interested to see how it all transpires in a live setting as they showcase Kill Krinkle Club’s electronic/synth-pop sound.

Special Guests on the night are Funeral Suits & Sunburnt Jets.

Acid Washed – ‘Acid Washed (Danger Remix)’

This beautiful rework by Danger of French Duo Acid Washed landed in my inbox last week. I’ll keep it short as I’m off to find the album – yes the remix is THAT good.

From the very first spin it’s captivating, drawing your undisputed attention immediately, deliciously eerie and spacey with luscious layers of sweeping 8-bit blips, beeps and a harpsichord, of all things.

The Danger remix is taken from the eponymous 12″ including remixes from The Hacker, Mickey Moonlight, Daniel Haaksman, Digikid84, Lazy Flow, Jungle Fiction and Stuff; out 17th September.

Looking forward to giving the album a spin and reporting back.

Totally Irish on 98FM

Lovely stuff

As some of you may already know I made my radio debut (for the blog) last night on Dublin’s 98FM show Totally Irish. I was joined on the panel by the lovely Aoife from Sweet Oblivion as we chatted about the highs and lows of last weekend’s Electric Picnic with presenter John Barker. Regular readers will be unsurprised at the artist who received praise, LCD Soundsystem, Johnny Flynn, These New Puritans and ASIWYFA amongst others.

It was pretty nerve-racking to begin with but once the palpitations were over with it turned out to be very enjoyable. I haven’t heard it back yet but hope it came across well. Thanks to John & Shane asking me along to take part in the show.

ASIWYFA were one of the major highlights of the weekend so here’s ‘S Is For Salamander’ is taken from the bands Letters EP.

Gang Starr ‘Live in Amsterdam 1998’

DJ Premier uploaded a live set of Gang Starr in Amsterdam from 1998 to his website. I never saw them live but this sounds immense and after the untimely passing of Guru, anything and everything from the Gang Starr vaults are very welcome.

You can stream it from his blog or download it from here. Full set list after the  jump.

Mario at 25

Super Mario Bros, one of the most recognizable and popular game series will celebrate its 25th birthday this week. The game was released in Japan September 13, 1985 revolutionising computer games forever. I, like most people spent a lot of time playing the various Mario games over the years.

The mushroom munching plumber has had an eventful 25 years, anyway it’s the perfect excuse to share this super RAC (Remix Artist Collective) ‘Mario Bros mix’ – it’s not new but it’s a keeper, enjoy!

A crackin’ new video from Newbridge band Schmackey and the Salads. An homage to their spiritual leader, Hollywood Actor Matt Dillon.

These are the same guys who brought you the ‘Luas Rap’.

Field Music in Crawdaddy

After missing Field Music at Electric Picnic I decided to pop along and catch them in Dublin’s Crawdaddy last night. Having only had a few fleeting listens to their latest album (Measure) I was a little apprehensive whether a full live show would hold my attention, thankfully this issue didn’t arise.

The Mackem boys put on a great show of bright and infectious indie tunes filled with powerful guitar hooks that zig-zag across lush compositions and sumptuous vocal harmonies – ‘Them That Do Nothing’ and ‘Each Time Is A New Time’ were immense.

So glad I listened to the recommendations about these guys – now I’m off to work through their back catalogue.

No Techno | Records

A few weeks back I recieved a coulpe of  tracks from a new electronic music record label based out of LA called No Techno. The label comes from the humblist of beginings starting life following a series of open-stage showcases; emphasizing bands, DJs and producers who had shared an affinity for all things electronic with the pick of the pile being invited back to the studio.

The label was just recently launched in LA and they plan to begin releasing records in the coming months. Until then there are plenty of tunes/downloads up on their website but here’s a couple of crackin’ electro beauties from Costa, Buddha & Ghostkick and When Robots get mad to sink your teeth into – let’s hope they keep coming.
