BarryGruff Albums of the Year (2016)

barrygruff-albums-of-2016

Yes. It is that time of year again, lists, lists and more lists. Well, not be out done, here are my 13 (lucky for some) albums of 2016.

There was lots of great music in 2016 but I decided to keep it to a short list this year. Also, I’m hoping the festive period will provide some time to catch up on some records I’ve missed throughout the year, so feel free to recommend some listening material.

Anyway, without further ado, here are my favourite records from 2016:

There is also a Spotify playlist of all the albums, to save you time and hassle, and it is here.

13. Amber Arcades – ‘Fading Lines’

Amber Arcades‘ – Dutch-born musician Annelotte de Graaf – debut album is a dazzling blend of ‘60s tinged psych, lush jangly guitars, floating pop melodies and an abundance of propulsive, hypnotic krautrocky moments. [Listen here]

12. Tuff Love – ‘Resort’

Glaswegian scuzz-pop aficionados Tuff Love, combine a terrific trilogy of EPs into an LP of dazzling, fuzzy indie pop with sugar-sweet melodies and crunching choruses and shoegazey guitars galore. [Listen here]

11. Underworld – ‘Barbara Barbara, We Face A Shining Future’

A first proper Underworld record in half a decade, Karl Hyde and Rick Smith deliver a stomping electronic record that is up there with the best of their work. [Listen here]

10. The Coral – ‘Distance Inbetween’

Distance Inbetween – their eighth LP and first in over five years – saw The Coral rediscover their roots, mojo and discover their dark side and add a harder edge to their brand of psychedelic indie. It’s an evolution of the Wirral five piece’s sound into a cohesive, weird and imaginative psych-rock record, and one that grows with time. [Listen here]

09. Mr Huw – ‘Gwna Dy Feddwl I Lawr’

Gwna Dy Feddwl I Lawr is album number five from one of Wales’ finest, Mr. Huw and with it, he has delivered an irresistible set of inventive, electrifying indie. Sang in his native tongue, these are melodic songs with a spiky edge. Post-punk riffs and snappy drum-machine punctuate infectious pop melodies, mild psychedelic leanings and Huw’s affable Welsh lilt. A magnificent collection of soul consuming tunes which provide proof if proof be needed, that we should never underestimate the power of great music to overcome a small matter, like a language barrier. [Listen here]

08. Jinx Lennon – ‘Magic Bullets of Madness To Uplift The Grief Magnets’

2016 saw Jinx Lennon return with two new albums – Past Pupil Stay Sane and Magic Bullets of Madness To Uplift The Grief Magnets – with each offering distinctly different brilliance. Magic Bullets… is the pick of the pair but in fairness, both find the folk punk poet at his uncompromising best. Recorded with Liverpool experimentalists Clinic, it is a collection of instantly catchy tunes that boasts a meatier, more beat-driven sound, combined with Jinx’s raw truths kicking back against the humdrum bullshit of modern life. Jinx Lennon is a unique talent, a national treasure to be exact and this is him at his inherently brilliant best. [Listen here]

Tuff Love – ‘Resort’

TuffLove_Resort

Glaswegian scuzz-pop aficionados Tuff Love, have already graced us with a terrific trilogy of EPs in recent times. Those EPs – 2014’s ‘Junk’, and last year’s ‘Dross’ and ‘Dregs’ – marked them as one of the most exciting new bands around, all dazzling, fuzzy indie pop with sugar-sweet melodies and crunching choruses and shoegazey guitars galore.

This promise has been condensed into a single release, Resort. Ordered chronologically and marking the culmination of their hard work, it tells the Tuff Love story so far. Perhaps surprisingly, Resort sits together decidedly well as a ‘record’ in itself, especially considering the fragmented time in which they were recorded and originally released. Tuff Love strike a perfect balance between these contrasting ingredients of their sound. In all of three-and-a-half minutes, opener ‘Sweet Discontent’ outlines exactly what Tuff Love are all about. A racing melody is underpinned by a tattered grunge-echoing riff and a coarse, churning rhythm, and Julie Eisenstein’s dreamy, almost listlessness vocals, which exudes a sense of rage, sorrow and unhappiness. Raw yet dainty, blissfully rambunctious guitar-pop anthems, channeled through a haze of lo-fi recordings, is what they excel at. Of which any number of tracks from Resort will testify too; ‘Crocodile’, ‘Slammer’ or ‘Flamingo’, take your pick!

It’s not clear how far along Eisenstein and Bear are with a debut album proper, but Resort sits together rather nicely indeed. Not only does it allow us to draw a line under these excellent early EPs, it reminds us how good Tuff Love and you get the feeling they are destined for big things.

Resort is out now through Lost Map Records (buy or stream now).

Tuff Love Record Store Day Split 7″ w/ Lazy Day

Tuff Love Lazy Day #RSD15

Glaswegian scuzz-pop duo Tuff Love are teaming up with London lo-fi dream-pop quartet, Lazy Day, to release a split 7″ for Record Store Day 2015.

In under three minutes, Julie Eisenstein and Suse Bear unleash another glorious fuzzed-up and sun-soaked cut of exuberant lo-fi pop. The gloriously hook-laden ‘Groucho’ oozes with a sense of laid-back and effortless coolness as it rumbles along melodiously. Heart-warming harmonies, direct guitar lines and dreamy melodies combine with whispering cooing floating over the top, highlighting the duo’s flair for charming, and addictive and perfectly formed alternative rock.

On the flip side we’ve got London lo-fi dream-pop quartet Lazy Day, who are no less impressive and similarly exuberant. ‘Portrait’ navigates its way through a heady mix of slow-burning guitars and fizzing enveloping fuzz with some sublime sharp bursts of energy and adorned with soothingly soft buzzing, dreamlike melodies and magnificent vocals. Powerful, emotive and enriching.

A super sounding split release from two fine bands. What more could you want? The 7″ single is released on 18th April 2015 (Record Store Day) via Lost Map Records.

(Video) Tuff Love – ‘That’s Right’

TuffLove_3_lores

Everyone’s favourite Glaswegian scuzz-pop duo Tuff Love have previewed their forthcoming Dross EP with a brand new video for ‘That’s Right’.

Following on from ‘Slammer’, which was released toward the back end of 2014, Julie Eisenstein and Suse Bear once again reminded us of their endearing quality, and offer us some well needed new year cheer while they’re at it. Writing together in Suse’s bedroom and recording everything themselves, this musical pairing have already cooked up a flurry of addictive, perfectly formed alternative rock, and ‘That’s Right’ follows suit. Clocking in at just over two minutes, it’s a little fuzzy, distorted and rough around the edges, yet amid the searing, blistering riffs, fuzz and crashing drums, it is sewn together emphatically by their signature swoon-inducing pop harmonies and the beautiful breathy vocals floating over the top. Another absolutely brilliant two and a bit minutes of top notch indie/alt-rock from this increasingly promising and extremely exciting Glasgow pair.

‘That’s Right’ will feature alongside previous single ‘Slammer’ on the Dross EP, which is due for release on 10″ pink vinyl, via Lost Map Records on February 9th. Check ’em both out below.
