Seatbelts – ‘Citylines’

Liverpool outfit Seatbelts have been charming us with beautifully crafted bouts of guitar pop at each and every opportunity over the past few years.

Comprised from James Madden and Ryan Murphy of Hooton Tennis Club, and Abigail Woods and Alex Quinn, Seatbelts return with new single ‘Citylines’ and the foursome have delivered the goods yet again – and with the aid of new collaborators Christian Sandford (guitar, BIRD) and Sarah Sands (saxophone, Green Tangerines) adding layers of added depth to their sound.

Lifted from their forthcoming EP Welcome Simplicity, written and recorded in 2020 ‘Citylines’ is about yearning for experience. Yearning for the feeling of space, bathed in nature beyond the realms of a dysfunctional city. ‘Citylines’ is brimming with a sense of optimism that swells to a euphoric climax as guitars chime, shimmer and twang atop a rhythmic groove amid lavish layers of synth before shifting through the gears to a rousing finish. It is yet another stunning tune from Seatbelts and their quality catalog continues to grow.

Seatbelts – ‘Sinful City’

Liverpool outfit Seatbelts introduced their super brand of guitar pop with a slew of super singles – ‘Hey, Hey Tiger!’, ‘Content Crush’, ‘Capitalist Confession’, ‘Black Strings’ & ‘Superstardom’– and charming us beautifully with each and every opportunity.

Comprised from James Madden and Ryan Murphy of Hooton Tennis Club, and Abigail Woods and Alex Quinn, Seatbelts are back with new single ‘Sinful City’ – and the foursome have nailed it again. Opening with a mellow yet mournful haze a seductive rhythmic groove seeps through, picks up pace as a driving beat ushers us forward with help from an unrelenting bass loop. Guitars twang and mournful yet increasingly driven vocals flicker amid the shimmering haze as our protagonist, like the song, longs to escape the den of inequity as the latter finally finds its sweet dream-pop home only for it to melt away just a quick. It is yet another fabulous tune from Seatbelts and their quality catalog continues to grow.

Seatbelts – ‘Superstardom’

Liverpool outfit Seatbelts introduced their joyful brand of guitar pop with a slew of super singles – ‘Hey, Hey Tiger!’, ‘Content Crush’, ‘Capitalist Confession’ & ‘Black Strings’ – and absolutely nailed it with each and every opportunity.

Comprised from James Madden and Ryan Murphy of Hooton Tennis Club, and Abigail Woods and Alex Quinn, Seatbelts are back with new single ‘Superstardom’. Produced by Edwyn Collins, it is a bouncy three-minute celebration of human uniqueness as it skips along a jaunty strut and bubbling bassline while new wavey guitars glisten and woods powerful honeyed vocals soar above the seductive groover below. It is bright, playful and superbly addicting, and will no doubt have your head nodding and feet tapping. Seatbelts are a real favourite around these parts, each new release is a step up from the last and as utterly irresistible as ‘Superstardom’ is, I can’t help but wonder what they’ll have in store for us next.

Check out ‘Superstardom’ below and if that is to you liking, they’ve plenty more where that came from.

Introducing: Seatbelts

Formed over a drunken phone call between friends James Madden and Ryan Murphy – known for their work as Hooton Tennis Club – seeking an alternate name for The Beatles, and while jumbling the letters around Seatbelts poured forth.

With a name sorted, the pair set about recruiting Abigail Woods and Alex Quinn to complete the foursome and together the craft supremely addictive, smart contagious guitar pop that sounds simultaneously familiar and excitingly fresh. Back in May, Seatbelts released sublime debut EP Songs For Vonnegut, lead by single ‘Hey, Hey Tiger!’. A sharp, surreal, smart debut filled by an irresistible combination of off kilter riffs bubbling electronics and squelching guitar effects.

The Liverpool outfit have returned with a new single ‘Content Crush’ to sign off on 2018 on a high. A charming, warm and contagious guitar pop song, dreamy, swaying melodies mingle with lush instrumentation, rich with brass, woodwind, keys, bubbling bass and hazy guitar. ‘Content Crush’ is a mellow, warm and feel-good rush that culminates with a swelling and memorable chorus. Not only is the tune a doozy but it offers a gentle but valuable reminder that at a time when cynicism is as rife as zero-hour contracts, and it seems our only solution is to dive back into our screens: it’s OK to switch off for a while.

‘Content Crush’ will appear on a forthcoming new EP called Please Slow Down, which Seatbelts are working on at the moment – although there is not release date yet.
