Unloved – ‘Heartbreak’

maxresdefault

Comprised of vocalist and songwriter Jade Vincent, producer/composer Keefus Ciancia, and DJ/ producer/composer David Holmes, Unloved share a fondness for 60’s girl groups and classic film scores, to which they explored on their haunting, dramatic and evocative 2016 debut Guilty of Love.

Two years on and freshly signed to Heavenly Records, the trio have new single ‘Heartbreak’, the first taken from their forthcoming second album. ‘Heartbreak’ continues where the spellbinding Guilty of Love left off; a jaunty, defiant and richly atmospheric pop song tempered by a deliciously retro ’60s vibe and Vincent’s rich, smoky and evocative vocals. Possessed of an aching, rich-smoked tone, it is where the heart of the songs lie.

No confirmed date for the album yet but hopefully it surfaces in the coming months but for now, bask in the awesome glory of ‘Heartbreak’.

Introducing: David Hopkins

Las Vegas-based Irish artist David Hopkins has enjoyed a colourful musical career thus far – a former member of LiR, being involved in The Who’s 2001 Quadrophenia Tour, Damien Rice’s 2010 album There Are Debts before going on to front his own band Bombay Heavy in 2014.

Now, it’s Hopkins’ turn in the spotlight, showing off his solo wares with new album Overlook, which came out last month on St. August Records. Lead single ‘C’est La’ is a funky little groover that bobs along with a blend of psychedelic tones, laid-back rhythm, swooning strings and some French touches. A startlingly impressive intro with so much sparkle. ‘Irresponsible’ meanwhile, is quite simply sumptuous as a subtle jazz / bossa nova vibe is married with lush arrangements, swooning strings, with sweetly sung vocals above for a sound that is positively glowing. Two exquisite examples of Hopkins’ pristine popcraft; it is classic, rich, atmospheric and well beyond the reach of most.

Introducing: Them Jones

Them Jones are a Philadelphia five-piece with a flair for mesmerising, retro sounding, psych-tinged garage rock.

Them Jones’ most recent album, A Mountain of Nonsense was released last year and is a rough-around-the-edges and unpolished aural adventure, swathed in ’60s sounds and inspirations. Whether it is the likes of ‘Outburst’, which sees them tumble into a frenetic two-minute burst of punchy guitar driven garage-rock or ‘Honeytrap’, embracing the softer subtleties of the genre, giving a smoother, more soulful flavour – we find a band at the peak of their prowess. The same can be said for slowly waltzing and hushed poetic delights of ‘The Shrinking Violet’s Light’, and the record in general. At varying times, Them Jones bring to mind The Doors, The White Stripes, The Animals and any more of a similar ilk, yet they manage to maintain ownership of their musical vision and sound. This is their interpretation of a genre and era they know and love. They are masters of their craft and it executed with perfection, and sometimes you know, that is quite enough.

You can listen to some choice cuts from Them Jones’ latest album A Mountain of Nonsense. If those are to your liking, well, you can stream the LP here. Enjoy!
