Totally Irish on 98FM

Lovely stuff

As some of you may already know I made my radio debut (for the blog) last night on Dublin’s 98FM show Totally Irish. I was joined on the panel by the lovely Aoife from Sweet Oblivion as we chatted about the highs and lows of last weekend’s Electric Picnic with presenter John Barker. Regular readers will be unsurprised at the artist who received praise, LCD Soundsystem, Johnny Flynn, These New Puritans and ASIWYFA amongst others.

It was pretty nerve-racking to begin with but once the palpitations were over with it turned out to be very enjoyable. I haven’t heard it back yet but hope it came across well. Thanks to John & Shane asking me along to take part in the show.

ASIWYFA were one of the major highlights of the weekend so here’s ‘S Is For Salamander’ is taken from the bands Letters EP.

Electric Picnic 2010 Review: Sunday

Sunday was a little less eventful than Saturday. I got held up on the way to the Electric Arena to catch Bangor trio Two Door Cinema Club but managed to squeeze into the packed tent to hear them confidently lash out catchy tunes from their strong debut album in their last festival performance of 2010.

Next it was over to the Main Stage for Friendly Fires who I was eager to see again after one of the most eye-catching performances at last years Oxegen Festival. Unfortunately my revervations about the Main Stage slot were founded, they would’ve benifited from a better setting, the sensible decision would have been to put them on after TDCC in the Electric Arena. A minor complaint I guess as they put on a good show with ‘Skelton Boy’, ‘Diamonds’ and ‘In The Hospital’ were high points.

Electric Picnic 2010 Review: Saturday

Saturday was busier than Friday, up early and refreshed after some well needed kip and it was straight into the arena once the showers of rain subsided – so much music, I’ll try keep it short and to the point.

First up was Channel One a band who’ve proved elusive for one reason or another over the years. Their set was filled will electro tinged prog-rock which proved to be a nice way to start the day, they certainly would have benefited from a more suitable time slot.

Next up was Belfast’s And So I Watch You From Afar another new one, for me anyways, I’d been hearing great things about these guys so I was eager to see what all the fuss was about. As they exploded on to the stage it was pretty easy to see what the buzz is, massive sound, energy and stage presence – their raucous post-rock well truly battered whatever cobwebs were lying around from the previous nights antics – a new album recorded and on the way apparently.

Electric Picnic 2010 Review: Friday

This years Electric Picnic began at the ungodly hour of 6.15 AM as I was taking part in the ‘Tour De Picnic’ (Dublin – Stradbally Cycle) in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital. The final sum raised was €713.25, thanks to everyone who gave a few quid to a good cause. I can’t help but wonder what kind of countrywe live in that we must fundraise to keep hospitals going?

The cycle was well organised on the day even if the pre-registration and bike checking were hugely annoying especially when you receive details days before the cycle, that aside it was very enjoyable and I’m glad I took part. Everything ran smoothly setting off at 10.30 with plenty of sunshine and no wind, arriving at EP before 3pm feeling a lot better than I had thought. After a well needed shower, lots of food and some chill out time Friday wasn’t going to be a write off as first suspected.

First on the agenda was Johnny Flynn on the Body & Soul stage, essentially an amphitheatre but in a beautifully intimate and relaxing setting perfectly suited for stirring and heartwarming folk music. There was a good crowd (predominantly female) waiting as he took to the stage, ably assisted by his backing band, they ran through a nice selection from his two excellent albums. He seemed unperturbed by the numerous declarations of love from adoring female members in the crowd who like the rest of us are transfixed by the set hanging on every word and chord. The renditions of  ‘Barnacle Warship’, ‘Been Listening’, ‘The Box’, ‘Cold Bread’ and ‘Leftovers’ were excellent, although it was disappointing ‘The Wrote and the Writ’ was left out. Lots to look forward to when he plays the Academy in a few weeks.

The Libertines Live at Reading 2010

In case you didn’t already know The Libertines reunited to play slots at the weekends Reading and Leeds festivals. The band have always divided opinions but my feelings are clear, ignore the media circus surrounding them, they are one of the best bands of the last decade and of critical importance to the rebirth and rejuvenation of the UK indie/rock music scene.

Sadly like most of you reading I wasn’t there, judging by the footage on the beeb it seems they’ve come through it with flying colours and maybe they could pay Ireland a visit? Here are a few moments captured by the BBC whose festival coverage is always second to none. It’s a pity our ‘state’ broadcaster pretty much ignores our own festivals, more interested in the likes of Crystal Swing, show bands and making a career for Ryan Tubridy (rant over).

Eoghan over at The Point of Everything has almost the whole show in videos (kudos) you should definitely check it out over on his blog.

Electric Picnic: Picks for 2010

Electric Picnic takes place this weekend and it will be my 4th trip to Stradbally for what’s become an annual musical pilgrimage. There’s plenty to do over the weekend; an eclectic mix of music, food, drama, arts, comedy & spoken word with George Galloway & Howard Marks in particular being an exciting prospect. This year will be a little different for me as I’m taking part in the 90km ‘Tour De Picnic’ cycle to the festival in aid of Temple Street Hospital – I’d expect to be a wee bit tired on Friday night but one must persevere.

None the less here is a purely subjective take on what acts worth a little of your time over the weekend. I’m always up for new musical discoveries especially at festivals so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

(There’s no stage times yet but I will fill them in when they are announced – go here for the day by day break down)

Friday:

Laura Marling: (Crawdaddy Stage 19.15)

Laura Marling is one of the stalwarts of the burgeoning folk renaissance in Britain and with two albums under her belt beautiful, seductive and sultry folk has never sounded better.  I saw her at Oxegen but the setting wasn’t suited to it with bigger stages drowning her out – looking forward to seeing her in more suitable surroundings at the picnic.

Mp3: Laura Marling – Devils Spoke

Johnny Flynn: (Body & Soul 19.10)

Friday is all about Folk and Marling’s mate Johnny Flynn is no slouch, a superb song writer whose ability to mold folks past with the here and now is unsurpassed by his contemporaries. He has two great albums under his belt, this year’s Been Listening and the masterful A Larum in particular means we should be in line for a memorable performance.

Johnny Flynn – The Box

Foals: (Crawdaddy Stage 21.20)

While I haven’t really got the 2nd album vibe from the Oxford 5-piece I absolutely loved Antidotes with its post-punk, looping post-rock jarring guitars. I caught them live last time they played and didn’t disappoint – expecting to be won over on the new stuff by a redoubtable live show.

Foals – Cassius

Others: Duke Special (Cosby Stage 23.00), The Rubberbandits (The Little Big Tent 01.15).

‘Tour de Picnic’ – The Bicycle Diaries #4

With only a few weeks to go before the 90km cycle to Electric Picnic from Dublin in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital I’m up to 60km which is 2/3 of the full cycle, not bad. The route was Barretstown-Carragh-Kilmeague-Allen-Milltown-Newbridge twice, it’s a nice cycle with probably Kildare’s only hill, the Hill of Allen .

The first 30km were fine but after a short break it was difficult to get back into a rhythm again, something I will have to sort out, it was only after the 50km mark that I began feeling fatigued. I’m okay today afterwards, so it seems this ‘training’ is working.

On the donations front the current total in the totalometer is €526, a big jump from the last time and thanks to everyone, you know who you are. Funds raised must be in before 20 August so anyone wishing to sponsor me still have time to do so if you want. Please give as little or a much as you can afford it all makes a difference – To donate simply go to my charity page or those who meet me in person, I will see you around.

All funds raised will go towards the Neurosurgery Appeal to assist patients suffering from diseases or injuries of the brain or spine.

Here’s a tune I never get tired of hearing from Blur legend Graham Coxon, enjoy!

Castlepalooza 2010: Videos/Review

I previously mentioned I was heading to Castlepalooza in Charleville Castle in Co. Offaly over the weekend charged with reviewing it for Goldenplec.com. The festival had a real relaxing and intimate vibe due in no small way to the picturesque surroundings of the castle, friendly staff and the rest of the 2000+ punters. All festivals have their faults/problems but I don’t want to dwell on them, I saw great sets from The Cast of Cheers, Adebisi Shank, Fionn Regan, Band on an Island, The Lowly Knights & Wave Machines.

Small festivals certainly have their place on the Irish circuit now and I’d highly recommend it for next year.

You can read my review over on Goldenplec.com (not sure how good/bad or indifferent it is) & there are some clips from the weekend below.

Thanks to Aidan & Goldenplec for the chance to go down & John for the photos.
