Cloud Nothings – ‘Attack On Memory’

There has been rather a lot of discussion about the current state and future of Indie-rock. Many critics too, have been quick to proclaim it’s death, as has the slew of half-arsed middle of the road bands claiming they are destined to save this undoubtedly ailing genre.

Of course, talk is cheap. Rather than chase cheap headlines Ohio’s Cloud Nothings have gone about things the right way, making an album which will go along way to breathe life into the moribund genre. Teaming up with producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Manic Street Preachers and PJ Harvey), Attack On Memory is heavyweight and rather muscular record which does just that.

It is a short, sharp shock to the system, the proverbial kick in the bollocks if you like, taking in post-rock, indie, post-punk and pure unadulterated noise. Interspersed with bursts of scuzzy powerful indie we are exposed to a barreling barrage of loud, pounding drums, raw guitars and a Dylan Baldi sounding like a young Jake Burns. The high points are many; the sensational instrumental thrash number ‘Separation’ or the raspy ‘Fall In’ and ‘Our Plans’ for instance. ‘Wasted Days’ is, however, undoubtedly the highpoint, a nine-minute masterpiece filled with pure adrenalin fueled energy and riffs.

Attack On Memory may not be purely an indie-rock record but it is an absolute revelation, a terrific album and one of the first must-listen to records of 2012.

Introducing: Miaoux Miaoux | Impressive Glasgow based spacey electronica

Miaoux Miaoux is 26-year-old Glasgow based producer Julian Corrie, who makes hugely impressive spacey electronica with indie and post-rock leanings.

Miaoux Miaoux’s fluid and uplifting indie-electronica sounds evoke moods a million miles from dreary rain soaked city of its birth. From the hazy, sun drenched sounds of ‘Hey Sound!’ to the swirling synths of ‘Cloud Computer’, we glide through a heavenly mist of lush harmonies, melodies and electronic beats and vibrations. While it may recall many of the finer points of Caribou, Four Tet and Hot Chip, it does have a groove all of its own, one deserving of a much larger audience.

Following a series of self-released records, Miaoux Miaoux has recently signed to Chemikal Underground with a new album is penciled in for the first half of 2012.

Tipped by many in 2009, it has taken nearly four years for a debut album to surface from Newcastle-based Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny.

Will it be worth the wait? Only time will tell. If it comes close to this wonderful rendition of ‘Sweet Tooth Bird’ for The Lightship Session Series we’ll be doing well. The song and performance are full of warmth and charm with trumpet fanfares and piano elevating Houghton’s somewhat uneasy whispering voice to new levels of greatness.

Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny will release the debut album, Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose, on February 28th.

Free Music: Raglans EP | Toe-tappingly infectious Indie from Greystones

Four-man-Wicklow-ensemble Raglans were the first band to be featured on the blog in 2012 and rightfully so. Their lavish toe-tappingly infectious blend of indie, folk and punk is one of the catchiest sounds doing the rounds at the moment.

We drop in on them again as they’ve generously made their self-titled debut EP available for free from bandcamp. The EP is lively, plucky and endearingly likeable indie, heavily indebted to the likes of The Rifles, The Coral and The La’s, it is brimming with a whirlwind of punchy vocals, guitar swaying twangynes and sing-a-long choruses.

Don’t just take my word for it, grab yourself a copy of the EP and watch out for Raglans throughout 2012 and beyond.

(Video) Orbital | Straight Sun

Legendary UK electro duo Orbital have announced their first album in eight years, Wonky, will be out on April 1st.

As well as this they have debuted their new single, ‘Straight Sun’. Last year ‘Never’ hinted the Hartnoll brothers had found their way again after a number of years in the wilderness. ‘Straight Sun’ seems to confirm these suspicions with another light and airy piece of sizzling synth driven electro.

You can watch the video and download ‘Never’ below. While ‘New France’ [ft. Zola Jesus] is also premiering on Pitchfork.

New: Blood Red Shoes – ‘Cold’

Exciting news this. Blood Red Shoes have announced the release of third album, In Time To Voices, which will follow-up to 2010’s superb Fire Like This on March 26th

That’s not all, the Brighton duo will precede the release with the single ‘Cold’ on March 19th. It’s an absolute beast, from the opening you’re hit with a torrential whirlwind of pummeling drumbeats and fuzzed up guitar. The vocal chemistry and interplay between the duo remains one of the band’s strongest assets, along with the sheer noise level.

I expect Blood Red Shoes will feature quite prolifically throughout the year, don’t just take my word for it, give ‘Cold’ the once over below.
