Free Gig: We Are Losers & No Monster Club :: Flanagan’s :: Newbridge :: Sept 22nd

The first ‘Barrygruff presents’ was a huge success, so, we decided to do another one.

We are delighted to welcome We Are Losers for their first headline gig in Newbridge. Fresh from storming sets at Leeds Festival and Castlepalooza this summer, We Are Losers bring their glorious lo-fi fuzz pop to Flanagan’s, Newbridge this Thursday, September 22nd.

Beginning as a solo-side project of Super Extra Bonus Party guitarist Gavin Elsted writing and recording songs in his bedroom, We Are Losers were quickly assembled from former bandmates Gary Clarke and Stephen Conlan and Bronwyn Murphy-White of Grand Pocket Orchestra. Their debut double a-side single ‘Sunset Song / Cheerleader’, released on Leeds Indie label ‘Dance to the Radio’ in July secured their position as one of the most exciting emerging acts in Ireland right now.

Accompanying them on the bill is No Monster Club who’s sunshine surf-rock and hyper rough-a-round the edges Strokes-esque sound has already won over legions of fans and seen them compared to the likes of The Strokes, The Velvet Underground and The Libertines. To boot, they are one of the finest live bands in Ireland right now.

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis rocked the socks off Oxegen back in July with their retro sounding rock n’ roll.

They have returned with a simple but eye-catching video for new single ‘Don’t Make A Fool Out Of Me’. It’s another cut of toe-tapping and infectious goodness taken from the trio’s album Smoking in Heaven.

The single out 24th of October 2011.

Death In Vegas’ BBC 6Music album preview mix

Richard Fearless recently made a 20 minute mix for BBC 6Music consisting exclusively of new material taken from Death In Vegas‘ forthcoming album Trans-Love Energies (September 23rd in Ireland / 26th UK ).

The mix sounds great which bodes well for the new LP. This has just made me even more eager to get my mitts of a copy of the album proper when it drops.

Tenaka – EPhemeral EP

Limerick producer Ronan Carroll aka Tenaka has just released his second EP, the stunning 7-track, EPhemeral. 

The EP is a collaborative affair featuring Sacred Animals, Holy Roman Army, Sorcha Brennan, Daithi and Elaine Mai and was produced by Ian Maleney. It is a brooding blend of chillout electronica mixing deep and dreamy atmospherics with subtle, crisp and shuffled beats, not to mention the equally atmospheric vocals. It is quite different to most of what I’m listening to but it is no less absorbing. You can download the whole thing for ‘name your price’ over at Tenaka’s bandcamp.

Tenaka plays Dublin’s Shebeen Chic this Friday 16th September (free entry) and HWCH 2011 on October 7th.

Black Box Revelation release Free EP, New Single & Album

Belgian blues-rock duo Black Box Revelation are gearing up for the release of their third LP, My Perception, in October.

For two guys their blues infused rock ‘n’ roll makes a hell of a racket; scuzzy guitars, dirty riffs and crashing drums it sounds like a perfect marriage of The White Stripes, BRMC, and The Black Keys. 

As a precursor to the new record they have released free EP, Shiver of Joy. It features two new B-sides and two tracks each from their two previous albums; Set Your Head On Fire (‘I Think I Like You’ & ‘Never Alone / Always Together’) and Silver Threats (‘You Better Get In Touch With The Devil’ and ‘Love Licks’). If your a new or returning fan this is the perfect reintroduction to the talents of  Jan Paternoster and Dries Van Dijck.

They’ve also released new single ‘Rattle My Heart’ which suggests we can expect a slightly softer side to the duo’s new LP . Check it out below.

A quick round-up: Barrygruff Presents #1 ‘Ciaran Lenehan w/ Appo’

Last month we hosted the very first ‘Barrygruff Presents’ show in Flanagan’s, down here in Newbridge.

The performances from both Appo (w/ Aoife & Mark Byrne) and Ciaran Lenehan went down a treat with the punters. I was genuinely shocked with just how many people turned out for the show, it’s that kind of thing that makes it worth doing.

It was a massive success on so many levels, so much so that we’re doing another one on Thursday September 22nd (Arthur’s Day) w/ We Are Losers and No Monster Club but more on that later.

Introducing: Fiore

LA collective Fiore tread, in a sense, along a similar path as bands like Tame Impala, MGMT and even The Coral with their huge appreciation for psychedelic rock music.

Fiore’s self-titled, debut LP is a record that reveals it’s true worth with repeated plays. It wins the listener over as it meanders along accompanied eerie vocals and fuzzed up riffs. This is a must for fans of the likes of Tame Impala, The Coral or any psych-rock bands.

King Kong Company – ‘Zoids’

The recently reunited King Kong Company have been generously dropping a new track and video every month since February. It is part of an ambitious project which will see them releasing the lot as album by the end of 2011.

Not only has the prolific release rate been impressive but the standard of the tracks too, has been astounding. The latest, ‘Zoids’ is arguably the most impressive to date and is yet another stomping dance track from the Waterford lads.

Rían from Solar Bears has recently been doing a couple of remixes under the alias of Trenchurian.

On this occasion he has turned his attention to Nottingham outfit Swimming, reworking their new track ‘Neutron Wireless Crystal’. Their dark pop song has been transformed into an uplifting and lush encounter – sit is imply fabulous! 

Keep your eyes and ears peeled as we’ve been promised reworks of The Cast Of Cheers and RSAG on the way soon too.

Ghostpoet – Liiines (Error Operator Straight Edge Remix)

Ghostpoet‘s latest single ‘Liiines’ has been given a face lift from London remixer/producer Error Operator.

‘Liiines’ is already one of the UK MC’s more uplifting numbers and it is given a nice coat of gloss along with a slight livening up too. This is the third single taken from his stunning Mercury nominated debut, Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam.

Ghostpoet hits Whelan’s (Dublin) on September 26th. Tickets €12.45 excl. charges.
