Playlist #2

Right it’s time for round 2. It’s been a strange auld week with Easter, the long weekend, parades and gargling messing up my flow, so I didn’t really get around to posting some of the stuff I had hoped (next week I promise). This weeks playlist is a wee bit electro heavy with Free The Robots, Zombie Nation and Shout Out Out Out Out severely outnumbering Indie experimentalists Suckers and Soulful-Hip-Hop-ers Ozomatli. Maybe this blogging malarkey has cured me of my renowned predilection for NME type indie bands, or perhaps there all shite these days, who knows?

The Reborn Identity – Britpop Rebooted

There is something hugely endearing about mashup records, perhaps it’s the unique blend of familiarity and the intrigue of the unknown involved. They became an art form in their own right (for me) after discovering 2 Many Dj’s, Girl Talk and brilliant bootlegs like The Clash: London Booted and Blur: Parkspliced. So what of the here and now?

UK-based The Reborn Identity has put together a clever and slick  mashup record in ‘Britpop Rebooted’, which rework some old Britpop classics from the likes of Blur, Supergrass and Oasis with a multitude of other tracks and genres. This is far from a simple excercise in ‘Britpop nostalgia’, bolstered by the use of other artists both past and present adding greatly to the value of the record, most notably ‘Rebel Stereo’ and ‘Blurring the Sheets’, mash-ups of Supergrass/Bowie and Blur/Ellie Goulding  respectively.

It’s obvious that a huge amount of time, effort and dedication has gone into this work, especially when you take into account that many other bootlegs are collaborative ventures involving numerous different Dj’s. It’s great to see that there is still a vibrant  and burgeoning mashup scene which is very much alive and well.  Equally refreshing is the continuing tradition of the online bootleg which demonstrates the dedication and love for this unique form. The good news is you can download the full album for free here, but if you still need convincing there are two very good reasons after the jump.

Video: Captain Moonlight – Fuck U

Continuing on today’s slightly more political than usual theme is a new video (of sorts) from Kilkenny rapper Captain Moonlight . ‘Fuck U’ was written as a sort of follow-up to the now infamous ‘Dirty Cunts’ and is from his brilliant album Agroculture pt.3 – On the Lough.

Video: Pendulum – Watercolour

Pendulum are without doubt one of the best live acts around at the moment and completely stole the show at the last two Oxegen festivals. No one does heavy metal/drum and bass hybrid better than these guys but the big problem has been transferring the energy of their riotous and explosive live performances to the studio. This might be because they are just so good live, anyway, the first taster of their new album is  the single ‘Watercolour’ so you can make up your own mind.

‘Watercolour’ is released on May 3rd and their new album is due on 24th May. You can catch ’em live in Belfast’s Ulster Hall on May 17th and Dublin’s Olympia on the 18th.

The Chemical Brothers back rockin’ beats

Today’s lesson has to be never use cheesy headlines (apologizes but its cheesy Tuesday), more importantly never underestimate The Chemical Brothers. Following a number of, well, less than impressive studio albums in recent years comes the announcement their seventh album, Further will be released on the 4th of June. The Press release claims the album to be the most psychedelic and melodic yet and will be matched by films made specifically for each of the eight album tracks by long-time live visuals collaborators Adam Smith and Marcus Lyall.

This news would normally have been greeted with little else than a fleeting glance but a radio rip has appeared on Youtube of ‘Escape Velocity’. The track  is from their new album and it seems on this evidence anyway, they’ve rediscovered what it’s all about. It’s time to get excited.

The Return of Johnny Flynn

It was a pretty decent week if like me your a fan of Johnny Flynn, following the announcement earlier this week that July 7th will see the release of his new album Been Listening. The follow-up to 2008’s A Larum, will feature collaborations with Laura Marling and Anna Calvi. I was late discovering (much to my shame, but better late than never eh?) A Larum towards the end of last year and it quickly became one of my favourite albums last year.  Flynn is a superb song writer  and is continuing to get plenty of play around these parts, delighted by this news would be an understatement.

But wait there was even more great news this week with Zane Lowe picking his new tune ‘Kentucky Pill’ as the hottest record in the world on Radio 1 (recording is below). It would appear that Flynn, a superb song writer whose ability to mold folks past with the here and now is unsurpassed by his contemporaries, has picked up where he left off. But you can be the judge below.

Flynn is playing a string of live dates with Mumford & Sons throughout April, as well as a tour of the UK in May but no sign of Irish dates yet.

Video: Steve Mason – Lost and Found

Hot on the heels of news that former Beta Band frontman Steve Mason is playing Electric Picnic comes the first single following his recent signing to Domino Records imprint Double Six. ‘Lost & Found’ is quite reminiscent of that Beta Band sound which strangely enough I’ve been reacquainting myself with recently after a regrettably long time.

‘Lost & Found’ backed by B-side ‘It’s Never You’, will be released digitally on April 19th followed by the album Boys Outside.

Same Shit, Different Tory

Having spent a number of years across the water I still keep an eye on political developments in Britain amongst other things. Britain is currently gearing up for a general election and the apathy is palpable as they ready to go to the polls in May. Politics in Britain may never have been at lower ebb spurred by the expenses scandal and of course the long-standing issue of the first past the post voting system that realistically insures rule by one of two parties, Labour or Conservative. Since the dash to the centre right by Labour under the guidance of Tony Blair and his ‘New Labour’ project, people in Britain are faced with a choice akin to two cheeks of the one arse I can wholeheartedly understand the apathetic nature of the British electorate.

For all the negative connotations and failures of ‘New Labour’, I have been once again reminded that they are a slightly (and I mean slightly) better prospect than a Tory government by an unlikely source, Paul Weller. The ‘Mod Father’ Paul Weller is interviewed in the latest edition of Hotpress tells it like it is, here’s a short extract from the article:

Although a relatively happy bunny these days, Weller blew a gasket recently when David Cameron said of his time at public school, “It meant a lot, some of those early Jam albums we used to listen to. I don’t see why the left should be the only ones allowed to listen to protest songs.”

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – which part of ‘Eton Rifles’ doesn’t he get?” Paul snaps. “They can re-brand all they want, but there’s fuck all difference between the Tories now and the way they were under Thatcher.”

I don’t think I need to go through a history lesson on what Thatcher did, we’d be here forever (let’s just say I agree with Galloway) but fair play to Weller for speaking out and speaking the truth. We have plenty of our trouble but it’s a pity our musicians don’t speak out, considering Bono was a special guest at the recent Tory conference and Geldof has been an advisor to them in the past, it speaks volumes really.

In the late 70’s/80’s music attempted to confront Thatcher and the Tories in a number of ways from the Rough Trade label to Billy Bragg, The Specials and Gang of Four. Below is a link to a BBC Radio documentary ‘Stand Down Margret’, music’s response to Thatcher. It’s not exactly the greatest but it gives you an idea of the lengths people went to oppose her and if it went on the quality of bands for/against her, the opposition would have won by knock out in round one.
