Eoin Dolan – ‘Superior Fiction’

Anytime Galway musician and singer-songwriter Eoin Dolan, one of Ireland’s finest talents as it goes, releases new material, it is a good time.

Dolan recently released a new 4-track EP, Superior Fiction via Citog Records and the EP follows Dolan’s excellent 2016 self-titled debut and second album Ubique, and unsurprisingly, it is all kinds of wonderful.

The EP finds Dolan at the peak of his powers once again. It is a distillation of Dolan’s knack for crafting sci-fi-tinged surf pop, marrying heartbreaking melodies and gentle instrumentation, sadness with beauty and interstellar psych-pop exploration with the imagery and atmosphere of a vintage seaside town. The EP’s lead single and title track – a self-proclaimed “ode to truth” – is equal parts breezy, melodic and catchy. ‘Superior Fiction’ is blends a jolly, jaunty surf-pop sway with woozy keyboard lines, twinkling effects with a harmonic and soft, lilting lyrical sensibility. This marriage of surf and mild psych sounds with the allure and awe of space and sci-fi, not only binds the record together but makes his craft a joy to behold. From the organ led celestial drift of the yearing opener ‘Roman Voice’, to the ‘Brose’ more unsettling and slightly sinister stylised sci-fi pop tones of ‘Brose’ to the delightful closer ‘Lunar Drift’, and its dreamy pastoral, tranquil undulating balladry; it is just magnificent.

Along with Eoin, Superior Fiction features Conor Deasy on guitar/backing vocals, James Casserly on drums and Adam Sheeran on bass, and is out now via Citog Records.

Introducing: Serol Serol

Originally the pop-project plaything for producers Llŷr Pari (Palenco, Omaloma) and George Amor (Omaloma, Sen Segur), Welsh cosmic pop foursome Serol Serol are completed and fronted by Leusa Rhys and Mali Sion.

Translating from Welsh to English as “Stellar Stellar”, Serol Serol is an apt handle as they craft sumptuous cosmic and charmingly celestial space-pop – of which their self-titled debut album is littered with. Their intricate illuminating interstellar adventures in warm, charming synth sounds are rooted by playful, oscillating rhythms, all pushed toward increasingly interesting spaces and completed by the mesmerising entwined vocals supplied by Rhy and Sion.

Serol Serol’s cosmic-pop credentials are typified by the first single to be lifted from their debut album, ‘K’TA’. Slick, classy and stylish, ‘K’TA’ is a tantalising celestial pop delight as it pops and sparks across the sky like a shooting star. ‘Cadwyni’ treats us to a swooning space waltz, meandering gushing synths, heavenly harmonies and vocal interchanges, and an inescapable groove. Two fabulous and totally irresistible celestial pop delights!

Omaloma – ‘Aros O Gwmpas’

‘Aros O Gwmpas’ is the brand new single from Omaloma, the latest musical incarnation from Welsh artist George Amor; formerly of now defunct Welsh psyche supremos Sen Segur.

Following on from shimmering, psychedelic escapism of debut single ‘Ha Ha Haf’ and ‘Eniwe’, with this new one ‘Aros O Gwmpas’, Amor has distilled the very essence of summer. Self-described as ‘Welsh language psychedelic space schmooze’, the song dazzles us with three minutes of shimmering, sun-kissed and gravity defying and dreaminess. A slinky soft-disco groove, spacey-synth and alluring, peaks through the haze to mingle gracefully with floating vocals, delivering the poetic welsh language. This is soft, soothing and effortless psych-pop perfection. Ladies & Gentleman, we are floating in space.
