Phoenix 48 Radiothon: 2 Hours w/ BarryGruff + The Boozey Swine

VLUU L100, M100 / Samsung L100, M100

A few weeks back, myself and The Boozey Swine, sandwich maker to the stars, took to the airwaves as part of Phoenix FM‘s 48 hour Radiothon.

The Radiothon was to raise funds for the station and to support the continued work it does in the Dublin 15 community, and it was an absolute pleasure to be part of. It was pretty nerve racking but after Boozey said a few prayers to the patron saint of radio, Larry Gogan, we we’re on our way and it was loads of fun. Sure what’s more enjoyable than taking over a studio to play loads of your favourite music? You can listen to the full two hour show in all it’s glory below and the tracklist is after the jump. We’d quite like to do something similar in the future but we shall see, maybe those prayers Boozey was rattling off will come through for us.

Before that, a massive thanks to Boozey for being part of the show, and everyone who donated a few quid and all the sound people at Phoenix FM, we thank you. Enjoy!

(Video) China Rats – ‘N.O.M.O.N.E.Y.’

china-rats

We’ve been keeping tabs on Leeds noisemakers China Rats for sometime now, and they have yet to disappoint us with their musical antics.

China Rats continue this rich vein of form with their latest slice of spikey indie-punk, ‘N.O.M.O.N.E.Y. (No Money)’. Clocking in at just two minutes we’re blasted with a modern take on The Undertones / The Buzzcocks school of punk. Where real life is laced with a sense of humour, as frustrations of being young, jobless and skint in Britain today are met with a punchy-chorus and an abundant of hooks, giving you the best of both worlds. And oh me oh my, that video is just sublime. It’s definitely worth at least two minutes of your time.

‘N.O.M.O.N.E.Y.’ is taken from their forthcoming EP Don’t Play With Fire, will be released on October 14th.

China Rats – ‘Nip It In The Bud’

China Rats fin B&W-3

China Rats spent the best part of 2012 feeding us a series of top notch indie-rock gems to indulge in, and the good news is, the lads from Leeds have begun their assault on 2013 in a similar fashion.

China Rats’ new single ‘Nip It In The Bud’, is a two and a half minute blast of rough ‘n’ ready rock ‘n’ roll. Delivered with more than whiff of swagger, it is a little bit ’60s, just a tad garage & punk, and a certain Arctic Monkeys influence continues to loom large. As one of the few recent ‘indie’ bands to emerge and create some cause for excitement, it’s good too see China Rats have picked up where they left off. Hopefully 2013 results in a more than just singles.

‘Nip It In The Bud’ is officially released on April 15th but you can listen to it below now.

Introducing: China Rats

Formed just over a year ago in Leeds, China Rats have spent that time gigging across the UK, releasing a self-produced debut EP and will release their debut single ‘(At Least Those) Kids Are Getting Fed’  in October through Once Upon A time Records.

There are a lot of influences at play here and they can certainly mix it up in terms of styles; from the racey surf pop punk of ‘N.O.M.O.N.E.Y’ and ‘Flying Solo’ to ‘Take No Prisoners’, which is imbued with a youthful Arctic Monkeys aesthetic. Meanwhile their new single ‘(At Least Those) Kids Are Getting Fed’ is three minutes of big, swaggering arena-rocking indie-rock.

While it may take time to define their own distinct sound, they already have a pretty formidable collection of enjoyable and infectious songs to indulge in. These are tunes any band would be proud to call their own, the future looks bright.
