Altvater – ‘Even Young’

Hailing from Columbia, South Carolina, producer Altvater proven a reliable source of downtempo electronica over the past 18 months or so.

His flair for fusing cinematic electronica, trip hop, and dark synthwave is marked by a deft ability to blend colour and warmth to a glacial but imperious ambience – as evidenced by his output thus far. Latest single ‘Even Young’ is of a similar high standard. It is an elegant, moody and emotive journey propelled along a steady drumbeat through a mellow veil of cinematic, ambient atmospheres. It is lush and dreamy as a delicate strum and ambient sounds set the clam tone as exquisite vocals add a lift while a flourish of warm keys and winds brings some illumination. It is rich and textured, deeply emotive and calming; it is a beautiful and meditative track, and one that is rather easy-on-the-ear too.

Bels Lontano – Kind Decade EP

a0461301813_10

Bels Lontano is an electronic music project from US-based composer and producer Bret Bohman.

Following on from his stellar introductory single ‘At the Horizon’, Bohman has released debut EP Kind Decade. Comprised of six tracks – incl. ‘At the Horizon’ – it explores concepts of liminal spaces, natural beauty, therapy and personal growth, while taking inspiration from a wide variety of musical and non-musical sources – love, anxiety, beats and ambience.

‘At the Horizon’ finds a sweet spot between beauty and terror, with a steady bass thump and crunchy beats, it carves a way through the ambient atmospheric soundscape and silky melody. Glistening strings mingle with glitchy sounds as the intensity grows; it is elegant but with a foreboding sense of mild eeriness never far away. ‘Tumbleweed’ is cut from a similar, if somewhat more dancefloor ready, ominous cloth as it booms along big and glitchy beats the downtempo ambient sounds and chugging intensity of techno collide to create something both beautiful and fierce. ‘Florid Entanglements’ fizzes by with fluidity and bursts with rushes of euphoria while beats pop and whizz frantically in a sea of tranquil sounds, airy tones and glacial chimes. Penultimate track ‘Citadel’ opens with slowly evolving atmospherics which leads through an epic buildup into heavy, glitchy sounds with chopped vocals flowing over a pulsing bassline and crashing beats. Kind Decade is an aural delight of elegance, ambience and precision beats – a beautiful bout of electronic escapism.

Richard Devine – ‘Takara’

a4097748176_10

After a six year break, Atlanta’s Richard Devine returned to the fold in 2018 with new album Sort/Lave, sculpting a sound that is complex, elegant and organic.

Devine’s return was heralded by his ambition to create a record that sounded different to his previous work, which had been more cold, digital, clinical even, in favour of something more organic, detailed, spacious, big and warm; a record to play all the way through that flowed in a seamless fashion. While Devine’s idea of warmth may be open to discussion, Sort\Lave is exquisite, as is the latest track lifted from it ‘Takara’. Something of an ambient lullaby, it is elegant, soft and beautiful. ‘Takara’ is a gorgeous track that twinkles and glistens amid ambient textures, subtle melody and atmospheric gushes – one of the album’s finest moments, perfectly suited to its role as the album closer.

Listen to ‘Takara’ below now – and if that is to your liking why not give Sort/Lave a spin? You can do so here.

HART – ‘Mantra’

artist profiles

HART is a UK-based producer shrouded in mystery and mystique.

Described as an eclectic musical oddball, a dream cloud sweeper, anime come real life and galaxy music decoder from the futures past… little else in the way of information is forthcoming.

What’s lacking in background information is more than made up for by the sheer spectacular brilliance of new single, ‘Mantra’. ‘Mantra’ is a dreamy, cosmic concoction that flutters gracefully in an elegant space between subtly euphoric and vaguely ambient. Fusing euphoric and electronic progression of melodies with nostalgic samples, we are utterly captivated through repeated propulsive beats and swirls, sustained rhythm and tender-hook promise of a euphoric climax – and protracted moments of twinkling crystalline grandeur. ‘Mantra’ is magnificent and transfixing with its crisp frosty elegance that takes you through time and space with an ease and breeze. A hypnotic and chilled sound collage.

You can enjoy ‘Mantra’ below (and enjoy it you will). The Reflective EP is out now, tune in here.
