The Last Shadow Puppets Return With New Single ‘Bad Habits’

Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner and Miles Kane have returned to their Last Shadow Puppets guise to release a second album, surely among the year’s most anticipated releases.

The pair’s last album together was 2008’s The Age Of The Understatement and like it, the new one is once again produced by Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford and Owen Pallett returns on arrangement duties. ‘Bad Habits’ is the first single from the album, and it’s loud, brash and urgent, with a spiky aggression to its slithering groovy core and insistent bassline, matched with Owen Pallett’s swirling Bond-esque string flourishes. It’s a pretty fiery return, alright.

An official release date for the so far unnamed second album has yet to be revealed, but so far all signs have pointed to a Spring 2016 release. The band are also playing Coachella so expect more live dates throughout the year. For now, check out ‘Bad Habits’ below.

Phoenix 48 Radiothon: 2 Hours w/ BarryGruff + The Boozey Swine

VLUU L100, M100 / Samsung L100, M100

A few weeks back, myself and The Boozey Swine, sandwich maker to the stars, took to the airwaves as part of Phoenix FM‘s 48 hour Radiothon.

The Radiothon was to raise funds for the station and to support the continued work it does in the Dublin 15 community, and it was an absolute pleasure to be part of. It was pretty nerve racking but after Boozey said a few prayers to the patron saint of radio, Larry Gogan, we we’re on our way and it was loads of fun. Sure what’s more enjoyable than taking over a studio to play loads of your favourite music? You can listen to the full two hour show in all it’s glory below and the tracklist is after the jump. We’d quite like to do something similar in the future but we shall see, maybe those prayers Boozey was rattling off will come through for us.

Before that, a massive thanks to Boozey for being part of the show, and everyone who donated a few quid and all the sound people at Phoenix FM, we thank you. Enjoy!

Alex Turner – ‘Submarine’

Whilst we await the release of the Arctic Monkeys next album, frontman Alex Turner has somehow found time to release a solo EP, ‘Sumarine’. The EP is the soundtrack for Richard Ayoade of IT Crowd fame’s debut movie of the same name.

It is somewhat different from the energetic brand of indie-punk which made his name. Always a supreme storyteller, Turner has found his niche, accompanied by some stripped back acoustic guitar and piano, his tender, touching, sometimes sneering vocals allow the stories to unfold perfectly. This short but sweet record has so much to offer as he picks and gently strums his way through ‘Hiding Tonight’, ‘Glass in the Park’ and ‘It’s Hard To Get Around The Wind’ with breathtaking wistful maturity. The tempo is upped meanwhile with ‘Stuck on the Puzzle’, a ponderous jaunty Lennon-esque tune while closer ‘Piledriver Waltz’ burns brightest of all. A sentimental, if slightly melancholic journey through forgotten youthful dreams and fears, quite similar in many ways to ‘Cornerstone’, an absolute gem from 2009’s HumbugA brief but worthwhile encounter, five beautifully sung warm and intimate songs. I wonder if he’s infected with the solo side-project bug (fingers crossed).

The EP is out now on Domino.
