Timothy J Fairplay – Sleighride/Blizzard (Andrew Weatherall rmx)

French label Astro Lab Recordings are releasing their very first compilation CD, Treasure Hunting, which showcases an ethos for embracing a broad spectrum of styles and genres.

While the compilation sounds pretty good in it’s entirety, Treasure Hunting, introduces one of the most tantalizing remixes of the year from legendary DJ & producer Andrew WeatherallWeatherall has reworked his colleague and studio engineer, Timothy J Fairplay‘s ‘Sleighride/Blizzard’. It is an awesome track, chugging along a murky mix of Krautrock and dub sounds, aided by delayed scratchy guitar, forming into a hypnotic druggy electronic beast.

Check it and Populette’s remix of another Timothy J Fairplay track, ‘Xylophone’, below. Treasure Hunting will be released on June 25th, 2012.

Max Tannone – Mic Check 1234! (Hip-Hop/Punk Mash-up)

Mash-ups have become increasingly popular over the past decade or so, however, sifting through the volumes of mediocrity and downright awful mash-ups can be an arduous task to say the least.

One man you can consistently bank on to deliver something of real class and quality is Max Tannone. The NYC producer is the man behind GhostfunkMos DubDub Kweli and Jaydiohead, and his brand new remix project Mic Check 1234! is yet another supremely brilliant piece of work. This time he’s decided to pit some of his favorite emcees’ most socio-political material with some of the best punk bands ever. And why not? Afterall, great hip-hop and punk have a lot in common; both want to affect change, to rebel against the status quo, or to simply just get up and move.

Yet another stunning album from Max Tannone and like the old adage says, some times the best things in life are free. You can spin some choice cuts below or check here for more info or download the whole thing for free.

The Pictish Trail – Of Course You Exist

Scottish alt-folker The Pictish Trail (aka Johnny Lynch) will be releasing his second album, ‘Secret Soundz Vol.2’, later in the year.

However, before all that, we have the Of Course You Exist EP, providing a glimpse into what we can expect from the forthcoming album. The oddball alt-folk sounds that make ‘Of Course You Exist’ are wonderful, warm and fuzzed up, with his scuzzed-up vocals straining to be heard against a backdrop of murky distorted electro beats and guitars.

The EP is available in that most unusual of formats; an item of clothing. It is sewn into the seams of a t-shirt and a sweatshirt, as two different download bundles.

You can stream ‘Of Course You Exist’ and the equally great remix from Edinburgh-based FOUND below.

Django Django – Skies Over Cairo (Adrian Sherwood On U Sound Dub)

A few weeks back I attempted to do Django Django‘s marvelous debut LP the justice it so desperately deserves.

One thing which I neglected to mention was how remixable so many of the songs sound. On that note,  here is Adrian Sherwood’s dub rerub of ‘Skies Over Cairo’. Retaining the undeniable groove, he has fleshed out the middle eastern allusions, introduced a splash of dub beats and effects to produce a marvelous piece of music in it’s own right!

‘Skies Over Cairo (Adrian Sherwood On U Sound Dub)’ is taken from the Storm 7″ vinyl, out now. Listen to it below.

Lightships – Two Lines (Raf Daddy Remix)

Lightships, the work of Gerard Love (of Teenage Fanclub fame), released their debut album Electric Cables last week.

Hot on its heels is ‘Two Lines’, a beautiful piece of work in its own right but Raf Daddy (The 2 Bears) enriches the track without pulling it apart completely. The percussion is more pronounced and prominent, vocals chopped and an assortment of instruments add energy to the electronic haze. A blissful piece of electro pop which brings to mind the sparkle of Elbow’s ‘One Day Like This’.

Electric Cables is out now on Domino.

Zombie Disco Squad | Righteous Sound (Jesse Rose Edit)

Having caused quite a stir since bursting on the scene back in 2006, London duo, Zombie Disco Squad, are readying the release of their long awaited debut album.

Before all that they have released the single ‘Righteous Sound’, featuring ’80s soul legend Omar. However, it is Jesse Rose’s edit which intrigues most. A flair for house music shines through from the original as Omar’s soulful vocals takes centre stage, sliding over a succession of tough beats and rhythms. A top tune which is comparable in many ways to some of Groove Armada’s early big hitters.

Brains is out on Made To Play on 28th May.

Introducing: Lemonada

There are plenty of things one can complain about living in Ireland but a dearth of musical talent, electronic is particular, is certainly not one of them. There’s been a steady stream of exceptional talent emerging over the past 12 months or so and you can add Lemonada to that list too.

From the confines of his bedroom the 21-year-old Dublin producer has been putting together impressive electronic, hip-hop infused, cut and paste sample-heavy style beats. Kelly Green Volume 1 is his first collection of material, all original tracks with some samples from records picked up in charity shops, it showcases this style perfectly. As well as making beat tapes he has also released a number of slick remixes for the likes of The Gorgeous Colours and Come On Live Long.

You can grab Kelly Green Volume 1 and the remixes below.

The Cast of Cheers: ‘Family’ video & Jape remix

The Cast of Cheers announced their return last month with a bang when Zane Lowe played ‘Family’ twice, back to back, on Radio 1.

One month and a shed load of radio plays later. The Cast of Cheers have unleashed a Russell Weekes directed video made up of 5,000 separate photographs for new single ‘Family’. The track itself is packed full of driving beats, catchy riffs and a ton of rhythmic energy; there is an air of The Futureheads or Maximo Park to it too. That’s not all, Jape has turned his hand to reworking of the song too, the result of which can be heard below.

‘Family’ is due on February 3rd via School Boy Error and is the first taster from The Cast of Cheers debut album proper, produced by Luke Smith (ex-Clor) and set for release in 2012.

Come On Live Long – White Horses (REID Remix)

Cork producer REID has kicked off 2012, a year which promises to be very good for him with some gusto.

He’s unveiled a reworking of Come On Live Long‘s ‘White Horses’ introducing his formidable atmospheric touch and adding real full on energy, flow and thumping beats. I can’t get enough of this remix at the moment, expect big things from REID this year.

You can catch him in Dublin this weekend at Ones To Watch 2012 @ Whelans (Main Venue) (On stage: 9PM) or Saturday at Forward/Slash @ The Twisted Pepper (On Stage: 10.15PM).

Sons & Daughters – Orion (Emperor Machine Remix)

Emperor Machine (aka Andy Meecham) has something of a Midas touch when it comes to remixing, everything he touches turns into gold.

The Shout Out Out Out Out and The Rapture reworks stand out from the rest and his latest work is no less impressive, continuing with this very high standard. He has reworked ‘Orion’ into a pretty relentless 11 and a half minute funk and disco fueled blowout for Sons & Daughters‘ Orion 12″ remix package due to be released on February 20th.

This is one of the most tantalising remixes I have heard in a long time, you can make your judgement below.
