Anorak Patch – ‘Blue Jeans’

Colchester-based foursome – Effie Lawrence, Eleanor Helliwell, Oscar Ryland & Luca Ryland – Anorak Patch, are a formidable proposition who introduced us to their raucous rock sound with single ‘Irate’ earlier in the year.

Anorak Patch are back with new single ‘Blue Jeans’ – and unsurprisingly, it is back with a bang! ‘Blue Jeans’ is an exhilarating exploration of their penchant for raucous rock fueled by a relentless and furiously rhythm meted out with metronomic precession while guitars crunch and riffs burn before breaking down to a meandering pace and exploding into fiery life again. It is all topped off with uncompromising vocal delivery, threatening yet nonchalant, setting the tone for what is now their hallmark; powerful, a fierce and compelling grunge-filled indie-rock.

Fleur bleu.e – ‘STOLT 89’

Fleur bleu.e are Paris-based dream-pop pairing of Delphine and Vladimir who met in 2019 and bonded over a mutual love of The Smiths, Beach House, Françoise Hardy and Elli et Jacno among others, and a desire to craft music that was emotionally ambiguous while being fueled by their teenage myths. And thus Fleur bleu.e came into being.

Deriving their name from a French expression that gently mocks sappy lovers, the pair delight and enthrall with their woozy indie-meets-dream-pop stylings, and latest single ‘STOLT 89’ is a perfect case in point. A woozy wander through a hazy world of lush and dreamy atmospheric splendor, ‘STOLT 89’ is gently propelled along a meandering groove while guitars shimmer and twang while signature dreamy vocals float gracefully above the warm blanket of mild fuzz. It is beautiful, hazy and heart-swelling psych-infused dream-pop perfection that will hypnotise you entirely.

Holiday Ghosts – ‘Off Grid’

Holiday Ghosts – based in Brighton, via Falmouth, appear to be something of a magnificent pop music recycling plant.

On the evidence of latest single ‘Off Grid’ Holiday Ghosts borrow from some of the finest sounds of past era – mining parts the Kinks, Violent Femmes, Alex Chilton and Modern Lovers – while transcending their influences in a rather simple manner: by producing a really great song and crafting their own irresistible concoction of modern indie-pop.

‘Off Grid’ is quite simply an irresistible indie-pop jam blending bright tones, sunny disposition, endearingly ramshackle jangling guitars and dueling vocal melodies, and packing pop sensibility at every turn. It fizzes with energy that whizzes around addictive melodies and all bathed in youthful sense of freedom and untamed possibilities. ‘Off Grid’ is an utterly addictive and contagious ball of fizzy joy and such is its earworm powers, it will compel you  to hum, whistle, sing-along from the off. An utterly addictive and contagious ball of fizzy joy, ‘Heading Out’ will be spinning around your head for days.

‘Off Grid’ is out now with forthcoming album, North Street Air, following on May 21st via Fat Cat Records.

Late Runner – ‘Spring’

Late Runner is the solo project of Danish musician / singer-songwriter Asger Tarpgaard, also known for his work with Superheroes.

Tarpgaard has announced the project with aptly titled single ‘Spring’, which is lifted from what will be Late Runner debut album – out in August via Crunchy Flog. ‘Spring’ is a morose, sweet and beautifully melancholic song. Tarpgaard’s hushed lilting vocals are ever-present in a shimmering world of synths and guitars as his vocals thrive in ever more interesting, beguiling and beautiful environs. At times it is melancholic, nostalgic, playful, colourful, and slightly surreal, we’re treated to a beautiful blend of dreamy and understated electronica, left-field folk, hazy psych and transfixing grooves, and all draped with seductive melodies. A magnificent, unique and truly beautiful track, and one which offers a wonderful introduction to the debut album of a promising new artist.

Listen to ‘Spring’ below – the album is out Friday, 20 August 2021.

Spirit Award – ‘Shout (Kill the Rich)’

Shout (Kill the Rich) is the latest sprawling single from Seattle-based psych-rock outfit Spirit Award.

Taken from their third album, Lunatic House, Shout (Kill the Rich) showcases a fearlessness to explore psychedelic rovings and embrace chaos and jarring jerky aggression; and striking a perfect balance between these two facets is the cornerstone to which everything else is built. ‘Shout (Kill the Rich)’ is a living, breathing and ever-changing kaleidescopic explosion, it opens with a grimy, chaotic and caustic energy as they explore a sound on the margin with taut drums, jerky riffs and swirls of distortion as it stares dead-eyed, with an ominous, vacant air of menace amid a sense of the otherworldly and rising tide of claustrophobia before reseeding to calmer climes. The gritty makes way for shimmering guitars, warm layers of lush synths and melodic sweetness to offer a sense of comfort and positivity. A magnificent and sprawling exploration – simply stunning!

Lauran Hibberd – ‘How Am I Still Alive (feat Lydia Night)’

Lauran Hibberd has been a really reliable source of irresistible blasts of fuzz-filled indie pop with a satiric, tongue-in-cheek manner wrapped with fuzz, crunchy guitars and anthemic tendencies.

Ahead of a brand new EP ‘Goober’ arriving on 30 July – the Isle of Wight native has returned with yet another massive, massive tune in the form of new single ‘How Am I Still Alive’ a collaboration with previous touring companion The Regrettes’ Lydia Night.

Marked with a lot of the recognisable Hibberd traits; it is punchy, potent and powerful with crunching guitars, massive soaring riffs and hooks you could hang your hat on, all bathed in a wall of warm fuzz and distortion.  Lyrically Hibberd toys with the bleakness of everyday life, making it sound more entertaining, making it a catchy fuzz-filled anthem bursting with all the brilliance we’ve come to know and love.

Yearning for the feeling of space, bathed in nature beyond the realms of a dysfunctional city. ‘Citylines’ is brimming with a sense of optimism that swells to a euphoric climax as guitars chime, shimmer and twang atop a rhythmic groove amid lavish layers of synth before shifting through the gears to a rousing finish. The project began life as home recorded lo-fi indie pop before releasing debut EP, ‘Swanning About’ last year, before signing off on 2020 with superb single ‘Move Without Place’. Devi has opened her 2021 account with new single ‘Mosquitos in the Backyard’; a lush, colourful confection of woozy, starry-eyed dream-pop. Maida Rose – ‘Where Do We Go’

Maida Rose is dream-pop pairing of Roos Meijer and Javièr den Leeuw from Dutch seaside city the Hague.

Early days it maybe, having two tracks to their name, the duo have already left a mark on 2021 with debut ‘Harmony of Heartache’ and current single ‘Where Do We Go’. It is a richly melodic and dreamy, underpinned by a sense of wistfulness, and endearingly languid, relaxed feel. Smooth, breathy vocals swirl around a gentle strum, shimmers of guitar, subtle-bass-groove and mellow melodies cast in lush, dreamy and beguiling atmospheres. ‘Where Do We Go’ pangs with heartfelt nostalgia, nostalgic for a dream that has passed but it has a lovely, human optimism, and leaves a warm wistful glow and a feeling that all things – good, bad or indifferent – eventually pass. Utterly beautiful, beguiling and hypnotic.
