Laughed the Boy – ‘Thirde’

Comprised of brothers Chris and Sean Panacci and Brennan Hrehoruk, Toronto-based indie trio Laughed The Boy have made a name for themselves in embracing and exploring a genuine love of unpretentious 90’s nostalgia.

The Canadian trio’s two albums to date – Here is Fine and Change of Scenery – are marvellous and littered with easy going tunes filled with catchy melodies and fuzzy guitars; a trend, along with  ear for melody and affection for 90s nostalgia, that continues with new single ‘Thirde’. It bobs along a gently undulating and merry groove as guitars jangle and shimmer while sweet and charming vocals roll breezily by. ‘Thirde’ is a sunny, shimmering and delightfully catchy earworm that will be spinning around your heads for days and days. No word on whether this is a stand alone single or we can expect an EP or LP in the future but for now, just enjoy the wonderful charming delights of ‘Thirde’.

Winter – ‘Healing’

Winter is LA by way of Brazil artist Samira Winter, who’s love for guitar music and nostalgic imagery inspires gorgeous dreamy cuts of pop perfection.

To date, Winter has provided an abundance of woozy, glimmering and wistful dream-pop songs – as evidenced by 2018 album Ethereality – and with new album Endless Space (Between You & I), rescheduled for July 24, we’ve been afforded a second glimpse from the LP, with a fourth single, ‘Healing’.

The track is typical Winter brilliance, drifting by in a daydream like state, as we are sated by delicate melodies and twinkling pop tones. It is touching and tender as Winter’s light and ethereal vocals glide through a wash of woozy arrangements, shimmering synth and glistening guitars – and we are mesmerised by the hypnotic and hazy allure that is ‘Healing’. Like previous releases have demonstrated, Winter posses a penchant for nostalgic psych-tinged dream-pop and a flair for pushing the limits to explore the outer realms and edges of experimentalism.

‘Healing’ is out now and Endless Space (Between You & I) will release on 24 July via Bar/None Records.

Springfield Elementary – ‘Doctor Doctor’

Springfield Elementary are Manchester-based post-punk powerhouse comprised of Billy Goodwin (Vocals/Guitar), Brad Lewis (Lead Guitar), Liam Moffat (Bass) and Chris Tomkinson (Drums).

The foursome introduced their raw, raucous and thrilling sound with singles ‘Machine Fiend’ and ‘Five Second Rule’ – a fierce and fearsome blend of post-punk and garage-rock. With their new single ‘Doctor Doctor’ Springfield Elementary continue to explore the punk and psych realms of their sound with thrilling results. It is beautiful carnage as a huge wall of fuzzed-up guitars, meaty riffs, muscular drums and big bassy sounds combine over what is a very catchy groove while powerful, gritty vocals soar high above.  It is a massive tune, exhilarating and bursting with vitality and will have you headed straight for repeated plays.

‘Doctor Doctor’ is out now on Detention Records, and available from the usual haunts:

Air Devi – ‘Move Without Place’

Air Devi is the project of Philadelphia singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Devi Majeske.

The project began life as home recorded lo-fi indie pop before releasing debut EP, swanning about, earlier this year. Majeske has followed that up with a brand new single called ‘Move Without Place’. A song about a search for freedom, truth, and belonging. Inspired by a desire to understand and connect with her Indian roots, ‘Move Without Place’ blends a love of punk rock music alongside her Indian heritage into a colourful confection of woozy, starry-eyed dream-pop. Hazy distorted guitars pair with melody dripping vocals above light, bright but quick-paced percussion that brushes through a swirling cloud of hazy and magical charm. It is bright, lush and shimmering delight filled with whimsical charm as it gently see-saws between woozy pop, psych brushstrokes and flourishes of intoxicating Indian sound. It is a richly rewarding and utterly divine single.

Listen to ‘Move Without Place’ below – you won’t be disappointed.

Khruangbin – ‘So We Won’t Forget’

Texan trio Khruangbin – Laura Lee Ochoa (bass), Mark Speer (guitar), and Donald “DJ” Johnson (drums) – are peerless sonic sorcerers who borrow from a world of influences.

There’s is a colourful coming together of different sound, genres, cultures and era; there is funk, soul and hip hop, some Latin, Middle Eastern and Asian influences and a whole lot of beautiful psychedelia.

Having only recently been converted to their neo-psychedelic ways – more specifically their stunning 2018 record Con Todo El Mundo – it is exciting to discover Khruangbin have a new album Mordechai, primed for June 26. Ahead of the new record, the trio have shared ‘So We Won’t Forget’.It is a super smooth jam that saunters through the sunburned haze as jangly guitar intertwines with a funky bass line and jazzy rhythms, while Ochoa’s breezy vocals elevate us to next level dreaminess. ‘So We Won’t Forget’ is an undeniably beautiful track filled with hazy psych vibes, seductive grooves and dreamy, escapist allure.

James Holt – ‘Pendulum’

James Holt is a Manchester musician with a real flare for sweet, charming and glinting jangle-pop and a supreme ear for melody and hook.

His latest single ‘Pendulum’ is a joyous wee slice of indie-pop. Produced by The Coral’s James Skelly it evokes the spirit of classic guitar pop and has arrived at the right time; it is the perfect companion to balmy summer sun. It is a lush and soft-edged guitar-pop gem as bright twangy guitars shimmer above a seductive groove, twinkly chimes of glockenspiel and sweet vocals, and all adorned with hooks you could hang your hat on. ‘Pendulum’ is hazy, charming and utterly divine pop song – and one that is totally irresistible.

Listen to ‘Pendulum’ below and be prepared to be bowled over.

Andrea Franz – ‘Running Back’

Andrea Franz is a Mexican American artist from Southern California who crafts, in her own words, ‘Sad Pop Rock’ as apt a description as you are likely to find.

Franz’s music sees mostly melancholic themes paired with upbeat, happy melodies, and 60s and 70s influences all wrapped up into a charming dreamy indie-pop package. Now based in Mexico City, the aforementioned sound has marked her five single to date, including the new one ‘Running Back’. Written following relocating to Mexico City, it is a tale of longing for friends and family, and pursuit of one’s dreams; ‘Running Back’ is an irresistible jam that exquisitely blurs the lines of beauty and darkness. A lush, woozy and dreamy air is permeated by melancholy, marked by dark and somewhat intense mood as honeyed vocals drift elegantly over a bubbling groove, playful melody bursts of electrified guitars and giddy escapist synth that brings to mind 80s video games lost to history.  ‘Running Back’ is a stunning single, given just a little bit of time, it will be bouncing around your head for days and days – leaving you all the better for it.

Listen to ‘Running Back’ below.

Seatbelts – ‘Sinful City’

Liverpool outfit Seatbelts introduced their super brand of guitar pop with a slew of super singles – ‘Hey, Hey Tiger!’, ‘Content Crush’, ‘Capitalist Confession’, ‘Black Strings’ & ‘Superstardom’– and charming us beautifully with each and every opportunity.

Comprised from James Madden and Ryan Murphy of Hooton Tennis Club, and Abigail Woods and Alex Quinn, Seatbelts are back with new single ‘Sinful City’ – and the foursome have nailed it again. Opening with a mellow yet mournful haze a seductive rhythmic groove seeps through, picks up pace as a driving beat ushers us forward with help from an unrelenting bass loop. Guitars twang and mournful yet increasingly driven vocals flicker amid the shimmering haze as our protagonist, like the song, longs to escape the den of inequity as the latter finally finds its sweet dream-pop home only for it to melt away just a quick. It is yet another fabulous tune from Seatbelts and their quality catalog continues to grow.

The Newcastle foursome have announced details for their debut EP ‘The Hissing’ – penned in for October 9 – and ahead of that, Pave The Jungle have shared new single ‘Ants’ – quelle surprise, it is a colossal jam. It is a raw and bruising encounter, as a massive onslaught of stomping drums and barreling rhythms rumble below the fiery riffs and feverish, jerky changes while the commanding vocals from Rachael Whittle demand your attention. ‘Ants’ is an absolute beast of a tune, and one that rages with all the devastating energy of a volcano.
