Toddla T ft. Wayne Marshall – Sky Surfin [Radip Rip]

Toddla T’s new single and first release from new label Ninja Tune, featuring Jamiacan Dancehall heavyweight Wayne Marshall got its first airing earlier this week by Zane Lowe. It was recorded in Kingston and Sheffield and it’s an unsurprisingly up tempo and lively blend of summer vibes to kick of  life at Ninja Tune, with the EP package promising some big remixes, I’m officially excited.

‘Sky Surfin’ will be released 28th June with the full package and 12″, out in late July.

Something 4 The Weekend

Last weekend was mainly about the ‘Platform V’ competition (in Kildare anyway, The Rags were fantastic in Whelans too) for opening slots on ‘The New Band Stage’ at this years Oxegen Festival reached semi-final stage in The Phoenix. It was a good buzz with two particularly great performances from eventual winners Awake Young Soldiers and Band on an Island, the final on 18th June should be a blast.

Meanwhile it’s a Bank Holiday weekend here and it’s all changed. Status Quo are set for The Curragh on Friday night (yes you read that right) and The Stone Roses Experience arrives to The Late Lounge in Kill on Saturday night. What’s the priority? The prospect of the Quo playing with the added bonus of throwing a few bets down is impossible to resist. It may surprise many of you but the tickets are already at hand, while they’re by no means cool or trendy (whatever that is) they do what they do very well and unlike many an ageing rock band they seem to love it.  The Stone Roses Experience is certainly on the list of things to do, cash permitting that is, a few winners on Friday would help with that.

New Gang of Four Material

The legendary and super influential post-punk band that is Gang of Four not only influenced a raft bands and musicians in the past two decades from Red Hot Chilli Peppers to The Futureheads, but  also recorded one of the greatest albums of all time, Entertainment. Now they have returned with new song ‘You Don’t Have To Be Mad’ via twitter and it looks as if they are sticking with the original formula of stripped-to-the-wire, droning, funk-fueled permutation of punk rock and not experimenting with anything too new.

Gang of Four will release new album Content via Pledge Music later this summer

We had something new, right, so here’s something old and blue.

The World Cup & What We’re Missing?

With squads finalised yesterday the World Cup in South Africa is almost upon us but for French hand Ireland could be there in all their sunburnt glory but what’s done is done. It’s an excellent opportunity to see what we’ve really missed out on, great world cup songs. By and large football songs are an awful breed but sometimes they’re pure novelty gold, World Cup songs can be even worse but in 1990 two classics appeared to spur on the ‘Irish’ team attending its first ever World Cup.

‘Put em Under Pressure’ and ‘Give it a Lash Jack’ are football songs par excellence – dodgy samples, stolen riffs and choruses, what more could you want? Perhaps you’re glad we didn’t make it now. Oh well to stave off the hunger for a new generation of songs we have a mash-up of Justice and Put em under Pressure from USA!USA!USA!, lovely stuff!

1990 World Cup Squad – Put em Under Pressure

Liam Harrison & The Goal Celebrities – Give it a Lash Jack

USA!USA!USA! – Put em under Nazareth (Jack Charlton V Justice)

Other legendary or awful football anthems? Be my guest.

The White White Lights

Normally this would go into a playlist but so good is this tune it fully deserves its own post!

Attention people, it’s time to become enlightened to the sounds of Austin band The White White Lights. I have heard a number of tracks from their Medium Head Boy EP and it’s rather impressive raunchy, if somewhat over the top (in a good way) rock n roll excess. ‘Space Invaders’ is unbelievably addictive, energetic straight-up in your face rock ‘n’ roll with a flashes of electro and screeching female vocals a la Hearts Revolution – not for the faint hearted.
