Love Music Hate Racism and Sunday Roast are organizing a Woody Guthrie a tribute night this Sunday (3rd October) in The Mercantile on Dame Street, Dublin. The night in aid of Huntingtons Disease Association of Ireland begins at 6pm with a screening of the documentary This Machine Kills Fascists, followed at 9pm by a gig with a wide array of performances for a cool €5 (see poster).
Guthrie is one of the greatest folk singers of all time, his influence on music can’t be discounted with some off the biggest and best names in folk owing much to his legacy; Bob Dylan, Pete Seegar, Billy Bragg & Christy Moore to name but a few. His short but exciting life was sadly cut short by Huntingtons Disease at the age of 55.
Unfortunately much of his musical recordings are of pretty poor quality by todays standards rendering them insurmountable for a less than committed listener. However, Billy Bragg & Wilco put together Mermaid Avenue 1 & 2, a fantastic collection of largely unrecorded Guthrie songs which is definitely worth picking up.
A quick nod to the good lads over at Come Here To Me! for making me aware of this one.
