Gruff Rhys – ‘Set Fire to the Stars’

Gruff Rhys‘ latest album American Interior has quite rightly been met by rave reviews and lavish praise. An astonishingly brilliant LP that among other things, displays how captivating a storyteller Rhys is, who wistfully spins wonderful narratives of being carried through new worlds and visions, and only adds to the particular idiosyncratic charm that this Welshman personifies.

As if Mr. Rhys hadn’t enough on his plate with ‘American Interior’ duties, he’s also penned the soundtrack for biopic, ‘Set Fire To The Stars’, about the life and work of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. In doing so he joined forces with drummer Chris Walmsley, Jim Barr who is the double bass player with Portishead, Osian Gwynedd (formerly of Big Leaves and Sybridion) on piano and Gruff Ab Arwel from Y Niwl who arranged the strings, to form a jazz band. The title track is a characteristically beguiling and lavish composition, that’s climactic moments occur when immaculate strings and exuberant brass combine to pierce the dark yet immersive, smoky, café-acclimatised vibe. All the while an ever assured Gruff Rhys’ utterances ring through with a recognizable assured and serene coolness. Never one to keep us waiting too long for something new and interesting is he? Thankfully not.

Welsh Wizards | Mixtape

This is a quite odd post even by my standards. This day ten years ago I upped sticks and moved to Wales, Wrexham to be precise, which explains all the Wrexham related tweets for anyone who follows me on Twitter.

Although I’m back in Ireland a few years now, it was one of my smarter moves & I retain a fondness for Wales as a country and the music it produces (although I don’t get over half as much as I’d like these days). Welsh music features quite prominently on the blog, something regular visitors are probably aware of. Apart from anything else it got me thinking and I decided to knock together a mixtape/compilation of some Welsh favourites from the past few years, with one or two older tracks thrown in for good measure.

So, without further waffling, here it is, some mighty fine weekend listening. Diolch. Mwynhewch.

Y Niwl – Y Niwl 4

North Wales quartet Y Niwl have returned with a brand new EP filled with instrumental psychedelic surf rock sounds.

The EP, Y Niwl 4, like their self-titled debut album, sounds more like a lost classic from a bygone era than an album recorded an produced in the 21st century. Y Niwl do so while sounding endearingly authentic, carving their own modern day niche with excellently arranged, twangy, breezy and bright instrumental psychedelic surf rock sounds. They have capture the essence, innocence, energy and fun of surf without ever sounding like tame re-hash merchants.

This is a very pure sound. Sit back, relax, switch off and enjoy the timeless, warm and wonderful carefree sounds of Y Niwl. You can stream/buy the EP here.

Y Niwl: Psychedelic surf rock sounds from North Wales

Wales is famed for many things; its mountains, beautiful scenery, rugby and male voice choirs but psychedelic surf rock? The rainy climes and beleagured coastline of North Wales is hardly the most likely place to spawn such a thing.

N. Wales quartet Y Niwl, who spent last year as support and backing band for Gruff Rhys on his ‘Hotel Shampoo’ tour, prove such assumptions are redundant. Their self-titled debut sounds more like a lost classic from a bygone era than an album recorded an produced in the 21st century. It has a vintage yet timeless air to it, with serious echoes of The Shadows and a glut of surf bands from the past, it is a very pure sound. Yet somehow Y Niwl still come across as endearingly authentic, carving their own modern day niche with excellently arranged, twangy, breezy and bright instrumental psychedelic surf rock sounds.

It is impossible not to fall in love with their warm and wonderful sounds, they’ll brighten anyone’s day for sure.
