2015 According to SertOne

One of my proudest achievements on the blog this year, or any year for that matter, is the release of GruffWuff; a 19 track compilation of new, previously unreleased and exclusive recordings from some of my very favourite acts over the past 5 years of blogging.

It was a truly fantastic way to mark 5 years of BarryGruff and I am incredibly grateful to everyone involved and the overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic response. As 2015 draws to a close, I have enlisted help from people who made the compilation what it was, to chat about their favourite moments and sounds from year, and up next is SertOne.

Liverpool-based Irish producer SertOne has been one of Ireland’s finest producers for some time. Always fresh, original, innovative and thoroughly enjoyable, and that’s the way we like it. It’s splendidly slick and riveting beat music, indebted to Hip Hop as much as the electronic side of production. Layered warm textures meet twitchy percussion and rhythms, stabs of synth for a wholly irresistible listen. A class act. No doubt about it.

Before we take a look at his 2015 sound selections, you should check out SertOne’s superb back catalogue here and his GruffWuff inclusion, ‘Seventeen’ – of which you can download here for FREE.

BarryGruff’s May 2015 Playlist

BGMY15

A regular monthly feature to the blog; a nice, neat and handy playlist of tracks featured during the month.

May was another fine month for new music. We had an exclusive premier of The Expert’s new tune, ‘Da Wha?’, the lead single from his forthcoming LP. There were new tunes from Sleaford Mods, Girlpool, Applescal & Tame Impala, ahead of their respective, forthcoming albums. There were excellent new singles from Tomorrows, Telegram, SertOne, Roots Manuva, Foreign/National, The Adventures of Bert & Henry and PANKHABILLI.

Also featuring on the playlist are: GEM_DOS, The North Sea, Disconcerting P, Sweet Baboo, Heaters & Faith Healer. Yeah, so, May was pretty damn good.

Listen to BarryGruff’s May 2015 playlist below.

SertOne – ‘Lost + Found (ft. Maribelle)’

FGL04artwork-1

Released last month on Feel Good Lost, ‘Lost + Found (ft. Maribelle)’, is the first release from SertOne in a while, since his marvelous four-track Mouthful EP last year in fact.

The Liverpool based Irish producer teamed up with Aussie singer Maribelle for ‘Lost + Found’. It’s a pumped out and polished tune, featuring a footwork rhythm that we’ve heard him work before (the original instrumental version ‘Firewerks’ appeared on the aforementioned Mouthful EP) but Maribelle’s voice brings an R&B pop edge to proceedings. The layered warm textures, twitchy percussion and rhythms, stabs of synth and warped vocal whisperings, make for a wholly irresistible backdrop for the outstanding vocals from the young Australian singer. It all makes for a rather compelling listen. SertOne has long been one of Ireland’s finest producers – always fresh, original, innovative and thoroughly enjoyable – long may it continue.

You can check out ‘Lost + Found (ft. Maribelle)’ below, along with his GruffWuff inclusion ‘Seventeen’ – of which you can download here for FREE.

Celebrating 5 Years of BarryGruff with ‘GruffWuff’: A 19 Track Compilation Album [Out Now]

So, the day has finally arrived; ‘GruffWuff‘ is out now!

I’ve been itching to share this with everyone and I very, happy this day has finally arrived. The past five years have been very interesting and for the most part, ever so much fun. I think this is a pretty special way to mark the occasion and I really hope you all enjoy the compilation as much as I do. Initially I thought an idea such as this was just a pipe dream and one that would remain just that. However, the enthusiasm that met my initial inquiries bowled me over, I couldn’t believe how eager everyone was. It is something that’ll stay with me forever and it means an awful lot. Hopefully it will shine a light, brief as it maybe on some of the acts that have brought me the most joy over the past few years.

Thanks to Stevie for all his assistance, Caroline for all her support and putting up with me, Peter Lee for mastering & all the artists who provided tracks for the compilation. A huge amount of credit must go to the artists involved for their eagerness and the ever so brilliant music.

So, to mark 5 years of BarryGruff, here is ‘GruffWuff’; a 19 track compilation of new, previously unreleased and exclusive recordings from some of my very favourite acts over the past 5 years of blogging. There is an act by act guide after the jump, I really hope everyone enjoys this as much as we did putting it together.

It’s yours now, just ‘name your price’ – which includes zero, so technically it’s free.

Celebrating 5 Years of BarryGruff with ‘GruffWuff’: A 19 Track Compilation Album

GRUFFWUFF Final

BarryGruff is 5 years old today!

Those five years have been interesting and fun. The blog has ebbed and flowed in parallel with my own life which has moved on somewhat from where it was back in March 2010. Since my early teens spouting about music has always been part and parcel of my life but I’m very grateful to have been in a position to share those musings and whatnot with a wider audience than my mates (or whoever is willing to listen).

Blogging has become quite a big part of my life and while listening to and discovering new music etc. is something that comes rather natural, a lot of my free time is devoted to the upkeep of the blog and how much longer I can continue to do so is anyone’s guess. It might be one year or another five, who knows? So with that in mind I really wanted to do something really special to mark the occasion and I’m pretty damn chuffed with this one.

Without further a do, to celebrate 5 years of BarryGruff is ‘GruffWuff’: A 19 track compilation of new, previously unreleased and exclusive recordings from some of my very favourite acts over the past 5 years of blogging. While I initially thought it was just a pipe dream and one that would remain just that, the enthusiasm that met my initial inquiries bowled me over, I couldn’t believe how eager everyone was. It is something that’ll stay with me forever and it means an awful lot. Hopefully it will shine a light, brief as it maybe on some of the acts that have brought me the most joy over the past few years. The enjoyment music brings me can’t be overstated, be it happy times or sad times, there’s one constant; music.

Thanks to Stevie for all his assistance, Caroline for putting up with me, Peter Lee for mastering & all the artists who provided tracks for the compilation. A huge amount of credit must go to the artists involved for their eagerness and the ever so brilliant music.

‘GruffWuff’ will be released through Bandcamp on Thursday, March 19th and the tracklisting is below for your perusal. I’m really, really excited for people to finally hear what everyone’s been working away on for the past 9 months.

SertOne – ‘Mouthful EP’

shot by mumptown1

Liverpool-based Irish producer SertOne has been one of Ireland’s finest producers for sometime. Always fresh, original, innovative and thoroughly enjoyable; his new EP, Mouthful, is in keeping with this standard.

It’s a splendid collection of beat music, in SertOne’s slick and riveting style and inspired by the Chicago’s Drill & Footwork scene, it focuses on the more juke-indebted sides of electronic production. ‘Firewerks’ is the pick of an overwhelmingly impressive pile. Its layered warm textures, twitchy percussion and rhythms, stabs of synth and warped vocal whisperings, making for a wholly irresistible listen and demonstrate his supreme prowess as a producer. SertOne is a class act. No doubt about it.

SertOne’s Mouthful EP is out now through Fly High Society and available on both digital and cassette. You can buy / stream in full here. Check out ‘Firewerks’ below.

Swall – Bright//Moon//Light (CL Moons Remix)

68481_518004361556905_1025233971_n

If you’re a regular on this blog, you will probably already know SertOne is held in rather high esteem around this neck of the woods.

Well, not just content with knocking our sock off with his hip-hop influenced electronics, the ever prolific Liverpool based Irish producer has an equally impressive body of work under his other pseudonym CL MoonsCL Moons is his a footwork/juke sideline and as an introduction to this alter-alter ego, is his reworking of Swall’s ‘Bright//Moon//Light’. It sees Swall’s soft wandering pop recast in a different light, with Moons kicking in with sharp, snappy beats at a BPM up there with the national debt (that’s high in case you were wondering).

This tune has been on constant rotation along with CL Moons’ edit of DJ Fresh ‘Gatekeeper’ for the past month. You can listen to them both below. See also, Sweekers Vol. 1 & Vol. 2, where by Mr. Moons has teamed up with fellow Irish producer Lemonada.

SertOne – Vinyl Release & Remixes

SertOne is without question one of Ireland’s most promising producers, both prodigious and prolific. It is strange to still refer to him as ‘promising’ such is sheer dearth of material already under his belt, but with each release comes promise of even greater things to come. One wonders where will he go to next?

For now at any rate, it is back to the future. Released digitally last year, Shapes in the Sky has now thankfully made it’s way onto 12″ vinyl. The EP itself is fantastic; head-nodding beats, slick samples and hip-hop influenced grooves are met with swagger and confidence, to produce some serious funked up jams that will bounce around your head all day. The 12″ is out now and comes with quality exclusive remixes from Danny Drive Thru, Lemonada and SIGNAL, which you can sample below.

Shapes in the Sky is out now on 12″ vinyl through Melted Music & can be ordered from here. For the record (no pun intended, my copy hasn’t left the turntable since it arrived this morning.

SertOne – Shapes In The Sky

SertOne is with out doubt one of Ireland’s most promising talents, both prodigious and prolific (I make his fifth release inside of 18 months). His brand new EP, Shapes In The Sky, shows the quality is there in abundance, along with the quantity.

There is a swagger and air of confidence to Shapes In The Sky. Armed with an astonishing array of head-nodding beats and slick samples, SertOne takes us on a journey through a subterranean world of 8 bit sounds, beats and a hip-hop influenced grooves. Funked up jams like ‘Further Down’ and ‘Lego’ will bounce around your head all day. ‘They Call’ does much the same, shuffling along a steady stream of beats with the much sampled Damien Marley line “Out In The Streets They Call It Murder”, adding another layer of sheen.

At just over 7 minutes ‘Breath’ is possible the finest example of the fine dexterity his talent possesses. It slides between a frenetic run of beats and synths to a more relaxed bass jam allowing every breath from Rachel Koeman (Young Wonder) joyous vocals to really come to the fore.

Proof, if proof be needed, SertOne is one of the most talented of a new generation of electronic producers coming out of Ireland. It is an  arduous task to do this EP justice with mere words, on that note, why not give it a much deserved listen?

Shapes In The Sky is out now on Melted Music.
