BarryGruff’s July 2015 playlist

BGJL15

A now regular monthly feature, whereby we round up all the blog action with a nice, neat and handy playlist of tracks featured during the month.

July was pretty ace! We had new tunes from The School, The Stammer and DRINKS ahead of their respective, forthcoming new albums, and the return of WE//ARE//ANIMAL. There were excellent new singles from Neon Wolf, Galants, Lethal Dialect, Manor, Kelly Lee Owens, The Expert, Glass Sines and Koloto.

Also featured on this month’s playlist are great tracks from Bedbugs, Effin, Gwenno, Trails and Ways, Open Window and Joan. So, July was pretty good. And that’s all before mentioning that Justin Beats gave Jamie xx’s new record In Colour, the once over, Johnny Feeney reported from Knockanstockan and we had a chat with Trails and Ways. And the small matter of my albums of the year so far list.

Listen to BarryGruff’s July 2015 playlist below.

Neon Wolf – ‘A Place To Call Home’

Neon Wolf

To date, Kilkenny-based Neon Wolf have built a pretty solid rep when it comes to catchy, easy-on-the-ears indie-rock with infectious pop leanings.

Things sound like they’re kicking it up a notch for the 5-piece with the release of their brand new single, ‘A Place To Call Home’, on UK label Killing Moon. ‘A Place To Call Home’ is a vibrant and colourful piece of synth sprinkled indie-pop. Flush with pleasure it bounces along with iridescent melodies, bright rhythms and more hooks than a gigantic cloakroom, and all imbued with some serious tropical vibes. It brings to mind a certain other Irish band and famed purveyors of melodic indie-pop, namely, Two Door Cinema Club, in their pomp. An irresistible three-minute slice of electronic-tinged indie-pop, this is a rather fine return from Neon Wolf.

‘A Place To Call Home’ is out now and you can listen to it below, or purchase it via iTunes. For those of you back home headed to Longitude this weekend, Neon Wolf play the Main Stage, Saturday at 2pm.

Phoenix 48 Radiothon: 2 Hours w/ BarryGruff + The Boozey Swine

VLUU L100, M100 / Samsung L100, M100

A few weeks back, myself and The Boozey Swine, sandwich maker to the stars, took to the airwaves as part of Phoenix FM‘s 48 hour Radiothon.

The Radiothon was to raise funds for the station and to support the continued work it does in the Dublin 15 community, and it was an absolute pleasure to be part of. It was pretty nerve racking but after Boozey said a few prayers to the patron saint of radio, Larry Gogan, we we’re on our way and it was loads of fun. Sure what’s more enjoyable than taking over a studio to play loads of your favourite music? You can listen to the full two hour show in all it’s glory below and the tracklist is after the jump. We’d quite like to do something similar in the future but we shall see, maybe those prayers Boozey was rattling off will come through for us.

Before that, a massive thanks to Boozey for being part of the show, and everyone who donated a few quid and all the sound people at Phoenix FM, we thank you. Enjoy!

BarryGruff Presents #4: Ghost Estates w/ Neon Wolf :: Flanagan’s :: Newbridge :: April 8th

So, it’s gig #4 for ‘BarryGruff’ Presents’ in Flanagan’s, Newbridge on Easter Sunday, April 8th. Entry is FREE as always and judging by the previous gigs, this is going to be one hell of a night!

Dublin 5 piece Ghost Estates made quite an impression in the past 12 months. A number stellar singles and storming live shows, including Electric Picnic and Hard Working Class Heroes, earned them a lot of praise from this blog and earmarked them as definite ‘one’s to watch’.

They are currently readying their debut album for release in June and the band brings their delectably tight indie sound to Newbridge for the first time. Accompanying them on the bill is Thomastown band Neon Wolf, whose own unbridled feel-good indie-pop has caused more than their fair share of a stir and they left quite an impression the last time they were in town.

So, forget about those Easter eggs, this is going to be a great night and one not to be missed! Entry is FREE as always and starts at 8.30pm, Easter Sunday, April 8thth. More info & Facebook event here.

(Video) Neon Wolf – ‘All of it’s Yours’

Neon Wolf popped up on the radar last year with a number of tasty slices of feel good indie.

The Thomastown lads have just released their debut video for single ‘All of its Yours’. The single was recorded with Leo Pearson (U2, David Holmes, RSAG) and the video is the handy work of MJ O’Carroll and Dylan Vaughan. If there was ever a song to sum up what a band is all about, it is this, wonderfully catchy indie-pop with unbridled feel-good energy, executed with perfection.

There’s an EP release on the horizon and tour to follow too. Happy days indeed.

Neon Wolf – The Good Life
