February was good, especially for new record announcements and whatnot. We had tunes from Living Hour, Amber Arcades, Holy Fuck, SALES and MMOTHS from their respective, new and forthcoming albums. We had introductions to MILK, The Orange Kyte Bousada and BeardFight, while there were excellent new singles/EPs from Freedom Fry, Peaness, Totalitarian and Light Falls. Oh, and there were two new episodes of ‘Millions Like Us’, Justin Beats & I’s new music podcast extravaganza for 604now (if you missed them, check ’em here). Millions Like Us – Episode 10

We’re thrilled to share yet another Millions Like Us podcast with you all. It’s great to back with the latest in a series of music podcasts hosted by Justin & I, in conjunction with Vancouver news & culture site 604now.

On a bi-weekly basis we aim to please, providing  some lively and entertaining chat and eclectic selection of fabulous music from metro Vancouver and elsewhere. There’s plenty in there, well over an hour in fact, of great tunes and plenty of chat.

Mmoths – ‘Eva’

Three years in the making, Irish producer MMOTHS is gearing up for the release of his long-awaited debut album, Luneworks, on March 11th.

Following from last November’s lead track ‘Deu’, comes the album’s sublime second single ‘Eva’. ‘Eva’ is an evocative piece of music. Blending sound and textures it is bound together by a tick-tock rhythm and Colleran’s smooth, hypnotic vocal, perfectly complementing this atmospheric sea of sounds. An utterly beautiful and captivating piece. This is a tune to get lost in, evoking calmness, it is like finding a welcoming port, in the most volatile of storms. In the intervening years since first announcing himself and his talent with the self-titled debut EP (2012) and Diaries (2013), Newbridge man Jack Colleran’s music has grown and matured. ‘Deu’ suggested as much, and ‘Eva’ has all but confirmed that we’re going to be in for a treat when the debut album arrives.

We’re back once again with a brand new episode of ‘Millions Like Us’, and we’re delighted as always.

This is Episode #7 (time really is flying) of Justin & I’s music podcast in conjunction with Vancouver news & culture site 604now. It is a bi-weekly digest of music from metro Vancouver and beyond, the latest serving has the usual whimsical chatter and top tunes, comprised from an eclectic mix of styles and genres. MMOTHS Announces Debut Album ‘Luneworks’, and Shares ‘Deu’

Three years in the works, Irish producer MMOTHS has announced details of his long-awaited debut album, Luneworks.

With two EPs already under his belt – the self-titled debut EP (2012) and Diaries (2013) – MMOTHS , aka Jack Colleran, admirably took his time with his debut LP. Luneworks is pencilled in for release in March next year and accompanying news of its release is the album’s lead single, ‘Deu’. An incredibly lush, bewitching and utterly beautiful slice of electronica, ‘Deu’ pulses, shimmers and grows, immersing you in a world of thoughtful contemplation. Falling somewhere between ambient and downtempo, and while retaining both the warmth and ambient tag of his earlier work, this is a different animal to what introduced us to his talent some four years ago. Rather than negate him, the time Colleran has taken to craft his debut appears to be paying off, this is magnificent and evocative to say the least; needless to say things are looking well for his debut LP.

Luneworks is out on March 11th 2016 through OYAE/Because. For now, you can check out ‘Deu’ below, along with the Hassan Rahim & Scott J. Ross directed video.

 

Mmoths – ‘Yago’ + ‘Santo’

It’s been a pretty quiet year for Mmoths (aka Jack Colleran) but for the most part of the past 12 months he’s been working on his forthcoming, so far unnamed, LP.

More recently though, he’s broken radio silence to share with us two new tracks, ‘Santo’ and ‘Yago’. While not on the album, both were written during that period and offer a flavour of what’s on the horizon perhaps? ‘Yago’ is hauntingly mesmerizing. Fusing subtle euphoric undercurrents with choral vocals, stretched and tort to resemble something of a primal cry, we’re engulfed amid an electronic fog leaving us with something epic and huge. ‘Santo’ meanwhile is dark and heavy, weighed down by abrasive electronics and ambient noises only to be raised by vocals awash with reverb and head-nodding, pounding beats. Having spent the guts of the last year or so penning new material for the album, the fruits of his labour certainly ups expectations for what is to come, which is likely be with us some time in 2015.

Before all that however, there are ‘Santo’ and ‘Yago’ for your listening pleasure. In other Mmoths news, you can catch him + Guests at Block B, Smithfield Market, Smithfield, Dublin 1 on Saturday, December 20th. Tickets are €15 (from here) + BYOB.

Best of 2012: w/ Dan Shanahan of Wayfarer

It’s that time of year when every music website, publication and blog (including this one) are busy compiling end of year lists. This time around, I thought I’d shift the focus to the bands and artist’s who’ve played a ‘BarryGruff Presents’ show this year and ask them for their ‘favourite album of 2012′, ‘favourite song of 2012′ & ‘favourite Irish song of the year’.

Right, that is enough from me, over to Dan Shanahan of Wayfarer and his picks from the year that was 2012.

Favourite album of 2012: Lau – ‘Race The Loser’

On a whim, I agreed to go see these fellows in the Riverbank Arts Centre in Newbridge one wet Thursday and by grud, it was a show I would never forget…I was sitting two rows from the front in a near empty venue watching three of the finest folk musicians to emerge from the British Isles, playing as if it were just for me. I was wrapped tight in a blanket of sounds that made me close my eyes and lose myself in the intricate musicality. Chris Drever on guitar with his tightly controlled and constant chord changes, complimented with a soft aching Scottish voice, singing songs about unrequited love in old folk songs. Aidan O’ Rourke holds his own with expert fiddle playing that gives soul to the compositions while Martin Green is unbelievable on the accordion, jumping in his seat as if possessed by the music…he’s the Hendrix of accordion players, no joke! These guys have featured on Jools Holland after they released this album and seem to be on the up and up so whenever they come back to Ireland, I dare say, check ’em out! And in the mean time…buy this album!!

Favourite song of 2012: Field Music – ‘Start The Day Right’

I’m crap at finding new music that I like, I’m old school…preferring the comfort of listening to Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti for the millionth time than pretending to enjoy such and such’s album because they’re “cool” or “the in thing” or whatever. I know, i sound like an old fart but good music always seems to creep its way onto my now defunct, 29 year old radar in random ways. Field Music’s Plumb was one album, blasting out of a mate’s car speakers one day, that grabbed my attention. This is the first song off of Plumb and it doesn’t mess around. These guys wear their influences on their sleeves with a prog-rock 70’s sound, some grandiose Beatles inspired moments and amazing musicianship. Check them out!

Favourite Irish song of 2012: Villagers – ‘The Waves’

What can I say about this band that hasn’t already been said? Conor’s beautiful words and melodies are always a treat for the old ear holes. I’ve seen them play a lot of new material at a gig in Kilkenny a few months back and I’m eagerly awaiting their new album next year which I’m sure will be a guaranteed thing of beauty. Also check out MMOTHS remix of this song, it’s jaw-droppingly good!

Mmoths – ‘Folding’

Mmoths is kicking off a US tour today, where he’ll be playing shows with Beat Connection, White Arrows and Hundred In The Hands.

To mark the occasion, he’s unveiled a brand new track, ‘Folding’, which has a bit more tempo, drive and intensity to it, while retaining his trademark airy blissfulness. I for one can’t get enough of ‘Folding’, it has been on constant repeat throughout the day, helping dispel the blues of yet another rain filled Irish summers’ day.

MMOTHS – Heart (Feat. Keep Shelly In Athens)

The past 12 months has witnessed an overwhelming explosion of exciting musical talent in Ireland.

None have captured the imagination more so than Newbridge producer Jack Colleran aka MMOTHS (formerly Moths). His enigmatic rise is well documented but is now gearing up for the release of his debut EP and has treated us to a sneak preview.

‘Heart’ will sound pretty familiar to many MMOTHS fans, it is after all a fully fleshed out of predecessor ‘<3′. This is gorgeous light, airy and dreamy song enhanced somewhat by Sarah from Keep Shelly In Athens, who lends her considerable vocal talents to yet another Irish electronic artist (she also featured on the latest Solar Bears track ‘Alpha People‘).

The EP is out on March 5 via SQE Music and is launched in Twisted Pepper on Feb 18th. You can listen to the song below.
