(Video) Gulp – ‘Vast Space’

Gulp - Mary Wycherley

Gulp, the musical project of Super Furry Animals’ Guto Pryce and Lindsey Leven, will release their debut album Season Sun on July 8th.

Ahead of the record’s impending release Gulp have kindly shared a music video for ‘Vast Space’, which we’ve heard before, and features on the LP. ‘Vast Space’ has a certain cinematic and ethereal charm. Leven’s cool, hushed vocals lightly coat the gritty, blues-infused psychedelia, and act as the perfect companion for those effervescent organ chimes. Driven by a rumbling, rambling bassline and a hypnotic rhythm; it’s got a solid sonic groove that brings to mind some of the slower Django Django moments. The video is stellar stuff, directed and animated by Ewan Jones Morris, it is the perfect visual companion. The visual, according to the band “takes its aesthetic from uhh, Greco-Roman architecture, Tetris and Microsoft Windows screensavers, maybe.” Whatever the case it’s a top notch track with an equally dazzling video, their debut record promises to be a delight.

Gulp release their debut album Season Sun on July 8th – until then sample the delight that is ‘Vast Space’.

Super Furry Animals‘ side projects seem to be the done thing at the minute. While Gruff Rhys might claim most of the attention and accolades, he is something of a musical gift that keeps on giving to be fair, the rest of the band are busy with their own respective works. Cian Ciaran has had two solo records in as many years and bassist Guto Pryce’s own side project, Gulp, have an album coming out in June.

Formed with singer Lindsey Leven, Gulp have already proven their caliber through earlier singles ‘Game of Love’ and ‘Play’. While both were exquisite cuts of breezy psych-folk, their latest single ‘Vast Space’ has much more cinematic, ethereal charm, not to mention oomph! Lindsey’s cool, hushed vocals lightly coat the gritty, blues-infused psychedelia, and act as the perfect companion for those effervescent organ chimes. Driven by a rumbling, rambling bassline and a hypnotic rhythm; it’s got a solid sonic groove that brings to mind some of the slower Django Django moments (who they were on tour with last year). Not bad company to be in at all.

Gulp‘s debut album, Season Sun will be released through Everloving Records on June 24th but for now, you can get acquainted with ‘Vast Space’.

Gulp – ‘Play’

While Gruff Rhys has quite rightly been receiving any amount of praise for his sol0 & side-project works, he is not the only Super Furry Animal making waves away from the day job.

Last year Cian Ciaran released the excellent Outside In and last week, he announced details of a pledge campaign for a second solo album, They Are Nothing Without Us (get involved here). Meanwhile SFA bassist Guto Pryce has been busy too, having teamed up with Lindsey Leven for side-project Gulp. The latest release ‘Play’ picks up where the pair left off with last year’s stunning single ‘Game of Love’. Both ‘Play’ and b-side ‘Hot Water’, are exquisite cuts of psych-folk, where by Leven’s beautiful and breezy vocals take centre stage. On the former they float over a roving rhythm, amid a tide of electronics and guitar, while lending to the sweetly hypnotic nature of the latter, tiptoeing the listener delicately into a daydreaming trance. Simply beautiful.

Play will be released on July 29th through their very own E.L.K.Records. It will be available on limited edition white vinyl 7″ and download from here.

Welsh Wizards | Mixtape

This is a quite odd post even by my standards. This day ten years ago I upped sticks and moved to Wales, Wrexham to be precise, which explains all the Wrexham related tweets for anyone who follows me on Twitter.

Although I’m back in Ireland a few years now, it was one of my smarter moves & I retain a fondness for Wales as a country and the music it produces (although I don’t get over half as much as I’d like these days). Welsh music features quite prominently on the blog, something regular visitors are probably aware of. Apart from anything else it got me thinking and I decided to knock together a mixtape/compilation of some Welsh favourites from the past few years, with one or two older tracks thrown in for good measure.

So, without further waffling, here it is, some mighty fine weekend listening. Diolch. Mwynhewch.

Introducing: Gulp | New Music from Super Furry Animals’ Guto Pryce

Gulp is brand new project from Super Furry Animals’ bassist Guto Pryce which also features the bewitching vocals of Welsh songstress Lindsay Leven.

‘Game Love’ is one side of a 7″ out on the group’s own E.L.K. label. It is breezy psych-folk with Leven’s vocals floating over  a tide of electronic drones and squelches, and waltzing drums. It is a sweetly hypnotic song, tiptoeing the listener delicately into a relaxing trance.

Super Furry Animals haven’t released a record in a while but we are being treated to veritable feast of musical side/sol0-projects.  Pryce’s stands tall with the work of fellow Super Furries Gruff Rhys and Cian Ciaran, great stuff. Check it out below.
