Eugene McGuinness – ‘Godiva’

Eugene McGuinness has announced his return with news that he’ll be releasing a new album, Chroma, on July 7th via Domino Records.

Chroma, the follow up to the strutting, self-assured indie of 2012’s Invitation To The Voyage is said to be “a direct, stripped-back guitar album”. Lead single ‘Godiva’ suggests as much. The polish of last album has been dispensed with somewhat, and replaced with the twisty and much more scuffed up indie that is ‘Godiva’. Saying all that, it still contains all the components which make his previous work so endearing; namely melodic guitar pop, a harmonious melody but treating it to a blaze of distortion. McGuinness has always been able to eke out a perfect balance between catchy pop and exhilarating indie and it looks as though he’s continuing that tradition.

Chroma, which also features ‘Fairlight‘, the single he released last year, is released on July 7th, the same date as ‘Godiva’. Of which you can check out for yourself below.

Everyone likes a surprise, well the good kind anyway. Eugene McGuinness has today released a new one-off single, ‘Fairlight’, which kind of came out of the blue this morning.

‘Fairlight’ is the first new material from McGuinness since the release of album The Invitation To The Voyage last summer. It sees him continue to eek out a space (and perfect balance) between catchy pop and exhilarating indie. That said, ‘Fairlight’ is marked by a proliferation of further influences creeping in too, namely those of a psychedelic and krautrock disposition. The result is a spacey and hypnotic atmospheric number with a shimmering full-blooded sound, a swell of guitars, Arabian-inspired keys and the recognizable vocal prowess from McGuinness. On the surface it seems this is a stand alone, one off single but perhaps not. We’ll just have to wait and see won’t we?

‘Fairlight’ is out today as a download from all the usual haunts. If you happen to be across the water, Eugene McGuinness will be playing a free show at ‘Birthdays’ in London on September 16th.

Eugene McGuinness‘ second album Invitation To The Voyage was one of the more enjoyable of 2012. Nothing startling or groundbreaking but an enjoyable blend of quirky, left-of-centre indie with a glossy pop sheen. With bursts of brass, surf/’60s pop guitar, clever lyrical wordplay and a confident swagger; McGuinness found a perfect balance between catchy pop and exhilarating indie.

His latest single taken from the aforementioned album, ‘Sugarplum’, demonstrates this balance as well as any: an off-kilter swaggering indie tune with a bouncy electro-pop beat, usual dose of witty lyrics. A timely remineder from McGuinness to what he’s all about, before the year ends.

‘Sugarplum’ is out on December 10th through Domino.

Forget about Marty and Lizzie, the only McGuinness we need concern ourselves with today is Eugene.

Eugene McGuinness is gearing up to release his brand new album, The Invitation to the Voyage, on the 6th August. He has unveiled a brand new single ‘Harlequinade’, released the same day, it is a rather chipper synth driven track which displays a somewhat fun and funkier disposition to what we’re used to hearing from McGuinness.

Eugene McGuinness‘ recent output has been outstanding. Not wasting any time he has revealed yet another thrilling track, a further appetizer of what’s to come on his forthcoming new album.

Of the previous tracks, ‘Lion’ was lively and bursting with brawn while ‘Thunderbolt‘ was a little more subtle, new single ‘Shotgun’ is a mixture of both styles. From the bassline in the introduction ‘Shotgun’ exudes a sense of danger and suspense, something enhanced by the James Bond / ’60s film noir detective flavoured video.

His new record is expected sometime in the first half of 2012 and on this startling form his new record cannot come quick enough.

Eugene McGuinness – ‘Thunderbolt’

Eugene McGuinness returns with a thrilling new track from his forthcoming new album, due out in the first half of 2012.

Previous single ‘Lion’ was lively, energetic and bursting with brawn while ‘Thunderbolt’ is just as slick, it displays the more subtle nuances of McGuinness’ talent. Built around a mesmeric clap of brass, off kilter guitars and wonderfully flexible vocals, this catchy number will no doubt be trapped in your head. McGuinness has been busy touring as part of Miles Kane’s band recently but this fabulous track gives greater weight to the view he’s going to make his own name well known this year.

It has been a little while but Eugene McGuinness is back with a new song ‘Lion’ as a free download.

Most recently he’s been busy touring as part of Miles Kane’s band but this sees a return to normal duties. ‘Lion’ is lively, uptempo and ridiculously catchy track swathed with swagger and a heavy, spooky guitar line or, according to the man himself, it’s just meant to be the biggest ‘fuck off’ my soul could muster”. Either way it’s a great track and offers an insight into new album, due for release in early 2012.

You can watch the video and download the track below. Check out ‘Fonz’ too, a timely reminder of what he’s already done.
