(Video) Mystery Jets – ‘Greatest Hits’

You forgot a username for the YouTube shortcode

Mystery Jets have unveiled their new video for latest single ‘Greatest Hits’. Taken from the excellent Radlands, it is a bouncy acoustic Britpop jam which sees an argument take place about who gets which records after a breakup.

‘Greatest Hits’ is one of the highlights from their new album which sounds like they have found their zip again. A perfect pop song, no doubt about it.

(Download) Kid Karate – Feral

We heard from Kid Karate not too long ago with their inclusion in Hot Press’ Genre Free compilation.

Now the Dublin punk/rock duo of Kevin Breen and Steven Gannon have unleashed ‘Feral’, the first track from their forthcoming debut album Night Terrors. Unleashed is pretty apt, ‘Feral’ is dangerously gritty, raw, brutal and full of blistering energy, thunderous guitars, howling vocals and ferocious drumming.

Get a load of the gritty-rock-riffage that is ‘Feral’ below, things are certainly hotting up for Kid Karate’s debut album, Night Terrors, penned in for release later this year.

The Big House – ‘Canyon Home in the Sun’

The Big House, Candie Payne & Paul Molloy, are gearing to the release of their debut single, double A-side, ‘Canyon Home in the Sun’/’Caught Up’.

Their’s is a cleverly blended a mix of soul, folk and west coast rock and roll, bound by the duo’s evocative close harmonies and shared lead vocals. The beautiful ‘Canyon Home in the Sun’ got it’s first airing on Janice Long’s BBC Radio 2 Show yesterday, the song, fleshed out with a full backing band for the first time, captures the essence of what The Big House are all about.

Luckily enough I had the pleasure of witnessing their delectable talents up close and personal in Liverpool’s Static Gallery back in January and going by the performance that night, there is plenty more to come from these two.

‘Canyon Home in the Sun’/’Caught Up’ is released on June 30th with a launch show in The Kazimier, Liverpool on the same date.

!Kaboogie/ PosterFish/ BarryGruff present: DJ MEK, Neil Bucannon, Deviant & Imploded View :: Saturday June 16th :: King 7, Dublin

I was absolutely thrilled with bringing ‘BarryGruff Presents’ to Dublin for the first time last Friday, in The Workman’s Club.

I am equally thrilled to be involved in another Dublin show; ‘BRAINMELT!’ in King 7, Capel St., Dublin 1. It’s a three-way split between !Kaboogie, PosterFish & BarryGruff and the line-up of DJ MEK, Neil Bucannon, Deviant & Imploded View speaks for itself. This is going to be a blinder of a night, no doubt about it!

It’s all happening this Saturday, June 16th in King 7, Capel St., Dublin 1. Admission: €5 before 11pm / €10 after. The Facebook event page is here and there’s more details on the acts below. I hope to see some of you there.

DJ MEK

Producer, remixer, award-winning scratch deejay, messer, and all-round talented fecker…. DJ MEK has been bangin’ out the quality since the late 80s. Mek is probably best known for being “the cat behind the decks” in legendary Irish hip-hip band Scary Eire, and for winning a ridiculous amount of awards for his turntable skills. We are verrrry excited about this one!

Neil Bucannon

Aka, Djackulate and Moschops, aka, Paddy and the Heart Brake Kidd, Neil Bucannon uses a patented hardware and wax “audio fun system”, consisting of 4 turntables, 1 cdj, MPC1000, SP404, Korg KP3, Pioneer EFX500, Loop pedal, Rane mixers and unwanted records Neil takes bits of everything to create an audio Art Attack without PVA glue.

Deviant

Deviant makes skratch music. Unadulterated by synthesizers, untouched by guitars, not a delay pedal in sight. Just records, hands, turntables, mixer, loop pedal and multitracker. Deviant has been musically active since 2001, promoting the Rootdown and GC Underground nights (with international hip-hop luminaries Edan, The P Brothers, DJ Noize and Supernatural), as part of four piece turntable band Vince Mack Mahon (with Jimmy Penguin, Mikey Fingers and Tweek) and as a founding member of Community Skratch, a non-profit collective dedicated to promoting the arts of turntable manipulation and sample culture. His recent live-sets have been mind-blowing, and his mixes, remixes, and original releases have been unreal. Have a listen for yourself…

Imploded View

Imploded View aka Jerome McCormick is Longford based beat-maker whose forte is experimental electronic music. Using a whole manner of retro synths and 1/4 inch Reel-to-Reel tape machine he creates extremely chilled ambient sounds. This is a rare opportunity to see him perform before the release of his debut LP later this year.

Introducing: Sisters

As one of my favourite bands in recent times, the disbanding of The Vagabonds was a bitter pill to take. With this in mind, it was nice to hear that one former vagabond, Niall Burns, is working on a material with new band Sisters

The previous predilection for punky sounds remains, especially with ‘Decay’, a chugging punky number with a grungier edge. Meanwhile ‘Burn Brighter’ is a much lighter and brighter affair, slipping and sliding between soft vocals and sweeter meandering guitars.

While these tracks are only demo’s for now, hopefully the lads will hit the studio soon. I’m looking forward to the results.

Night Symmetry – ‘Moon’

Bad Life are making quite a name for themselves putting out some of the finest electro and techno sounds around at the moment. The label’s latest signing Night Symmetry, coined as “a thoroughly modern Chemical Brothers for the small hours” continue this impressive trend.

Night Symmetry’s stunning debut single ‘Moon’ pounds through your subconscious, with a concoction of  thumping beats and industrial grooves, designed to set the blood rushing in the wee hours of the night.

Night Symmetry are an exciting prospect. It will be interesting to watch this one develop, but for now, give ‘Moon’ a spin below.

Introducing: The P Affection

Naas based indie-rockers The P Affection are currently readying the release of their second album through NIPPI Records.

The P Affection were sublimely brilliant at the last ‘BarryGruff Presents’ and one of the standout acts from the series so far. It was then that it dawned on me, somehow I had neglected to mention the band thus far and this is an attempt to redress the balance.

Their debut album was a great blend of indie-pop, rock, ska, and folk. While staying true to the sound of their debut The P Affection have grown as a band. Their sound is far tighter and they have managed to meld it all into distinct and cohesive sound, that is all their own.

Going by their set in Flanagan’s (of predominantly new material) and new tracks ‘Gone Fishing’ and ‘Made of the Right Stuff’, their second album one to watch out for.

Introducing: The Tea Street Band

In unearthing Liverpudlian’s The Tea Street Band we have stumbled upon an absolute treasure trove of summery musical companions.

Describing themselves as: ‘A bastard mutilation that combines 808 State with Doves and the gang mentality of The Happy Mondays’,. Pretty apt. The band blend influences of acid house, new wave and classic indie rock, fusing them electronically into uplifting dreamy synth pop. ‘Fiesta’ is a case in point, a heavenly mix of Balearic beats as is the euphoric ‘Disco Lights’, a heady blend of subtle grooves, reverb and indie-esque vocals.

The Tea Street Band are a band with a serious sheen and look destined to go places.

BarryGruff Presents: Trap Door, Knoxville Morning & Ginola :: Friday :: June 8th :: The Workman’s Club :: Dublin

The ‘BarryGruff Presents’ shows in Newbridge have been great and long may they continue! I’m absolutely thrilled that ‘BarryGruff Presents’ will be hitting the capital for the first time this Friday (June 8th) in The Workman’s Club.

We’ve got three top bands on the bill; Trap Door, Knoxville Morning & Ginola, followed by Gav (We Are Losers/ADULTROCK) spinning some tunes till the early hours. I really hope to some of you on Friday, it’s going to be a cracking night and best of all it is FREE in.

Admission Free/Doors 8pm & The Facebook Event Page is here. Here’s a few words on each of the bands.

Trap Door

Dublin trio Trap Door combine a rich mix of punk, folk, ska and hip-hop with insightful flowing and streetwise lyrics. In a similar approach of one Jamie T, Trap Door take the listener rumbustious rattle through urban life, something borne out on their excellent debut EP, Lata Town. With songs of lyrical depth, plenty of youthful lairiness and rebelliousness; Trap Door are a band to contend with.

Knoxville Morning

Knoxville Morning began life as a side-project of Band on an Island’s Ciaran Dwyer, before in time, growing into something far bigger. Joined by fellow BOAI members, Stefan Murphy, Gavin Elsted, Brian Gallagher, Claire Prendergast, Stephen Fahey and Laura Caffrey, they have created an inviting blend of folk, country and Americana, with an Irish twist. Knoxville Morings’ self titled debut will be released on this summer.

Ginola

Like your music loud? Then look no further than Ginola. This ragged Dublin punk trio have hardly put a foot wrong over the past twelve months, impressing with a number of singles, split releases and numerous scintillating live shows. Their forte is loud highly charged punk-rock with hopping basslines and battering drums.

Ginola – Thruster

Faws – ‘Whitney’

We were introduced to Faws earlier in the year with the release of his sublime debut EP, Antonym.

The anonymous Dublin producer is back and gearing up to release his second EP, Blue Notes. New track ‘Whitney’ reveals an insight into what we can expect from his new EP. ‘Whitney is an ambient and laid back jam with something of an aquatic feel.

The details to when Blue Notes will be released are pretty scarce, but needless to say ‘Whitney’ is more than enough to be getting on with.
